Are you on disability? If so, there is another program that is like the GI Bill called "vocational rehabiltation" but it can be used for more things than the GI Bill. You can use it to start a business, go to schools (trade type), college, and to get the equipment needed for your business. It's a fantastic deal. Unfortunetely, I think it is only for disabled vets, but it might be worth checking out. I use mine for college now that my GI Bill has been used up. Not quite as much as the GI Bill, as far as monthly payments but it makes up for it in benefits like medical, dental, etc. Ask your local VA rep. Hope this helps.

I do not have all the intel but I believe you can only use the GI bill for other than college classes is if it gives you an actual license allowing you to perform your trade. I could be wrong cause I was looking into using the GI bill to get flight ratings, but that was years ago. When I get to Tyndall on Monday I will go to the education office for ya and hopefully post up as soon as I find a computer with forum access. Gimme a day or two...

If I am not mistaken, I got a certificate when I completed the bladsmithing course at the ABS School. I believe you get some college credit for completion of the school since it is run through the community college. I would suggest contacting Scotty Hayes at Texarkana College. He runs the ABS School through the college and should be able to answer that question. When I was attending LSU on the GI Bill, I took a course in SCUBA diving. They way I got it approved was, it was a credited course and I took it as an "elective" course toward degree. I don't see why you couldn't do the same. Keep in mind that I did this in the early 70's and I'm sure the GI Bill has changed a lot since.

as far as the down payment for the house you can use your va loan that let you have not down payment if you qual. You can use it as many times as you want as long as you pay it off everytime.
just a thought

BB have you considered taking some Vo-Tech classes ? Welding, Machine Tool? Most are G.I ready

The person who could answer your questions is Scotty Hayes. Unless things have changed, the ABS school at Washington Ar is run in partnership with the Texarkana College.

Even if you can't use it specifically for bladesmith training

knifemaking is made up of lots of skills
welding, machining, jewelery arts
...
I would also consider some business courses -
You're not just an artist, you're an artist trying to run a business

marketing
accounting
web site design
entrepreneurship...

Hurry up and use it which ever way you can. I spent four years in the army and went back to school after 13 years. No GI bill.

It would have been much better than the student loans I am still paying off.

said the man that curses the people that are making him go back to school :)

i am not much the school type and have had a class on marketing and worked sales for a few years
might also look into machining as i know i make some cringe when i talk about using my mini mill :)
welding i got all the training i could need almost next door Mr duff is a killer welder and the only thing he could not get me would be the cert (little hazy on tig too but thats ok) all i got to do is ask him to teach me

I retired out of the Navy in 96 and went back to school for Vocational rehab and they trained me to be a machinist. They would not send me to a knifemaking course since there was no employment opportunities after graduation. However I did learn a lot about metals, how to run a lathe and mill and even CNC. Took metallurgy classes and others. It was worth every minute. If you cannot use the bill for the bladesmithing school find something to use it on. It is your money don't let the Government waste it on something else.

That's because my degree will be utter BS...just a piece of paper. If I could get a degree in machining/welding/etc and have it do me any good at work, I would :p

Deker doesn't want to go back to school because the other kids will tease him.

Seriously, get any classes that will qualify for the GI bill. Metallurgy, welding, jewelery and casting, machining, drafting,CAD and computer design programs, etc. Once you are a student and have been in the program for a while, you might have more luck applying for coverage of the ABS school. Like many Government programs, the need to appeal a NO answer is the way to get a YES. Many government programs have people running them who will automatically say NO if they have not had any experience with the subject.
