Although I've been carrying a knife since I was young, I'm pretty new to the current world of knives. I have a CS GI Tanto, a Becker BK-14, a CS Kukri Machete. The GI Tanto was purchased before I knew much about knives. My Becker was a much more...educated decision. Being a forum lurker and rare poster here over the last few months has inspired me to get into personalizing my knives (though my budget hasn't really increased to allow it. Doesn't my boss know I should get a raise for things like this?) I decided since my GI Tanto is a pretty cheap knife that it is a good subject for my attempts at modding. Here's what I've done to the thing so far, and maybe what I plan to do. Thoughts?

the drawn out mods look good, im liking the additional ergonomics for the finger choil and sub-hilt. however you might want to take your time with the handle, if you intend to use it for any kind of chopping that extra handle length will really help out. other wise the shortest handle you have goin looks pretty darn good.
 
I was thinking about doing the longer version to keep the chopping ability, but I think it will look pretty goofy with such a long handle, since I'm actually making the handle longer by making the hilt a subhilt. Maybe I'll draw it up again with a handle.
 
Love the patina on that tanto. What did you use? I have one on order and am planning to do the exact same mods. Removed upper gaurd and then strip and put a patina on it. Was a basic gel stripper adequate to get the coating off?
 
I actually used a dremel, but gel stripper should do the job.The patina was done with standard mustard.
 
This is a great knife. Removing the top guard is a must. I would also like to remove that hard tanto angle and give it some belly. Add a desert/sand camo duracoat job and lastly, it needs some canvas micarta scales. Yea baby, lets get er done!!!!!!!!!

How did you guys recoat the blades after grinding? The only keeping me from modding mine is the obvious grindmarks because of the paint.
