Gib Guignard Tribute...

You know how every once in awhile you see a friends name listed in the Birthday section with a (..) with the age? Today I saw the name of Gib Guignard, and it brought a smile to my face because I was just thinking about him a few days ago. Gib and I were not friends, I never met him. However, Buddy Thompson recently posted a beautiful picture he took of a "period piece" by John Cohea that was a cowboy styled bowie with a fringed sheath. It reminded me of the only knife in my collection that was of a similar style, and it was made made Gib..

Sadly Gib has passed, more than a few years ago.. I believe this wonderful knife was one of the very last, or the last he made. He collaborated with Chuck Burrows, who is known to many of us for his outstanding leather work... The knife bears the mark of "Cactus Forge"..

Gib, rest in piece, and on the day of your birth, I would like to post this photo of your work to remember you by... Best To All, Rich..

A fitting tribute.

Rich, I understand your memories. Gib and I never met in person, but he and I talked on the phone a bunch of times, early in my collecting career.

I had acquired a piece or two from Hill Pearce and wanted another 'Mediterranean' Bowie. Gib could do this.

Gib needed a camera, and I was upgrading. We did some bartering for trade and cash.

How long ago? Well, let's say that this style of photo I was REALLY proud of. ;)

Rich and I go wayyy back also, and I am certain he remembers this one still. I own it to this day.

Thanks for the callback in time. :D He was a humble and talented man, working out of a trailer in Arizona. A simple life.

Very nice picture Jim.
I visited Gib in Quartzite the month he passed away. My collecting was leaning toward AZ makers so I'd visit all those I was passing near. He did not look good, but having never met him I had no comparison. A lot of us old guys don't look so good the first time you see us. I have yet to get one of his blades, but I will someday. kevin

Thanks for starting this Rich - he's been on my mind all week since it being his birthday week and I was working on a piece using one of his blades.
Here's a few more CactusRose pieces with blades by Mr. Gib (who is sorely missed for his friendship as well as his talents..)

I have just a few more blades left (some knife, a couple of hawks, and two for warclubs, and will be slowly but surely finishing them up - I have two built that are waiting for sheaths, one which is a VERY special piece that Gib made especially for my birthday the January before he passed on and will stay with me.................I'll take a pic later and post it for your enjoyment.....

And all my pics are taken with one of Coop's old cameras, that I traded for like Gib!

GREAT tribute to an obviously talented man! I hadn't been familiar with Gib's knives previously and it is a pleasure seeing them.

You wouldn't tell if you look at my current collection but Gib Guignard was one of the makers that got me interested in knifecollecting in the first place.

Especially his collaborations with Chuck Burrows were very attractive to me. And when I look at the third knife from the top (in Chuck's post) I can see all the things that attracted me to his work.

Here's a nice hunter with sheath that I've enjoyed for some years now - Chuck and Gib collaborated on this one too.

That one there is pretty nice, imo!

I meant to invite anyone to post photos in my original post, but my short term memory failed me again... (one to many Pink Floyd shows I guess :D) However using the word "tribute" in my title seemed to do the trick. Thank you Coop, Buddy, and especially Chuck for your contributions. Besides your leather work, you deserve a hat tip for you sepia styled photographs, which I have always admired.. JC, if your used cameras, which appear to be everywhere, come with tutorial DVD's please notify me when one becomes available... Thanks to everyone who left a message. I wish I would have had the pleasure to have crossed paths with Gib..RIP Regards, Rich

Rich,

It's testimony to the man you are to have the wherewithall to return the smiles back onto Gib. He wasn't a world-class maker, but he was as warm a person as I've ever chatted with, and his work pleased MANY.

Chuck, I've often wondered if you have upgraded from that DSC-75 3.1mp camera. Damned if I could tell. Still a great camera.

Last one in the triad is our friend Nick Wheeler. The camera we used at the 2003 AKI is showing us his WIP shots. :)

Thanks, Rich.
