saw NCIS this week and Gibbs had a Strider i dont know what kind but if was definately a strider did anyone else see that, when did he switch to Strider he's always had a Gerber when did he switch or are my eyes decieving me?

Gibbs has had a Zero Tolerance 0302 for a little while. It's not a Strider, but you're not far off. It was a collaboration of design between Ken Onion and Mick Strider produced by Kershaw for their Zero Tolerance series. The 0302 was discontinued but is being brought back for 2012 according to Thomas though the 0300 basic model is pretty easy to come by.

Yeah I can definitely see how you would think it's a Strider, especially from the typically brief glances afforded on TV. It has a thick tigerstriped blade, a G10 and Titanium scale, and it's a tank! It's not hard to see the influence Mick Strider's hand in the design had. As for the switch from a 0302 to an 0301 that's a little odd. I thought Dinozzo had an 0301, but maybe they decided Gibbs should use the 0301 instead, who knows?

I thought I saw his ZT-0301, like mine, Tuesday night, second one down below:

It's become a keeper here, even if the others shown get a lot more carry here. It was <$200 delivered when I bought mine - a bit more. Gibbs' use seems to keep the discount now lower than it once was! I saw the 0302 sand colored one first - just couldn't see it in my pocket. The 0301 has a 'polite' assist - it opens easily, just won't jump out of your hand. My favorite - for the amount of carry it gets - is the BM 630 Skirmish. I can't see Jethro carrying one, however... maybe Toney! Love those Ti/S30V framelocks. The Ti/SG2 JYD2 is no slouch, either.

Always figured Gibbs for an A-F man, myself. Not to say that he doesn't carry one, and we just haven't seen it....

I suppose it makes sense that he would carry something quality, but the ZT series seems a little too tactical for a man who knows how to take care of business without getting his suit dirty.

It's just a movie dude. ;)

Right. And in the movies/tv, the hero doesn't get his suit dirty. Indiana Jones' hat always stays on, too.

I admire the fictional character of Leroy Jethro Gibbs for being able to catch the bad guy without wrinkling his sports jacket. The fact that I know it's written that way doesn't detract from my ability to enjoy the story.

But I also like characters who function within a self-consistent mileu, and to me, Gibbs doesn't seem the kind to carry a ZT. I think he would find it "tacticool", rather than "practical".

And I'm also the guy standing in front of the TV trying to figure out which knife the characters on various television shows are using. Not that I'm some kind of knife geek, or anything...

haha I didn't start doing this until I joined this forum. And I prefer "knife connoisseur," myself.

I agree based on his woodworking hobby and scotch drinking I put him as a traditional/garrett wade kind of guy...maybe a higo?

I think the writers use the ZT as a tool to show that even though he's refined his skills through experience, he still has a hard edge.

Maybe a SOG or one of those Dozier folders from Ka-Bar. I think he could appreciate the added security and ease of deployment that comes with modern folders over the Buck that I imagine stayed in his pocket for years, but he would still want something with clean, classic lines. Oh, and made in the USA. That would be important.

Which may rule out the Dozier....

That would be woodworking and bourbon. :D

I'm a Gibbs fan and I think the ZT knife fits like a charm. Gotta remember, he was Marine. Big knives and big guns. :D

Its a show, but I also think its some of best product placement on the "idiot box". Best scene to see what he carries, is the episode where Vance was in the hospital, after being injured. Gibbs gives him his 301.

Yeah but Gibbs has a ZT-560 on pre-order from KershawGuy. I'm not sure if he is going to carry it or safe queen it yet though. Time will tell.

I would consider Gibbs to be a more traditional and less tactical type of guy. William Henry's knives would fit well.
The 301 seems to be way too bulky for Jethro.

Ho crap ! He must trade it and order a large Sebenza , this the perfect knife for him.

I thought Sebenza for a minute, too, but Chris Reeve isn't an American maker; he's from South Africa.

William Henry is too expensive for a tool that you might end up breaking or losing.

I'd like to see a ZT with CF scales, or a subtle damascus. And I wouldn't put it past Gibbs to pull in an old favor with Mick Strider for a full custom Strider folder. I could also believe him pulling one of Mercworx folders out, but Mercworx probably isn't widely known in the television production world.
