Hello there from Down Under, New Zealand, I see you have run into a few of us before. Anyways, I am new new new to all this. Found your site a few months back and have been in the process of stalking the membership in order to see if you all know what you are about. I have since come to the conclusion that most of you do, so, that made me decide to join up and say hello to you all.

That introductory ramble was perhaps somewhat misleading. The real reason I am here, after hopefully bestowing you with the warm fuzzies knowing you are one of the ones who know what you are about I was referencing earlier, was to ID this errrr, ummm, hatchet? I came across in the bottom of my tool cabinet.

From what I can tell it is a WWII era Whitehouse (and possibly sons) shingling hatchet.

I can see you asking yourself "You just id'ed it yurself ya darn doofus!". Well, that is what I just said to myself anyway.

What I am wanting to know though is whether or not I use it as a practice jobber, or I stash it away for after I have worked on a few chinesium bugger to 'get my eye in'?

What say you.

Oh, and some pictures.

Seems I have to find how to do the media thing, I suspect there will be a thread on it here someplace. I shall away and find it........

Welcome! It really depends on the condition of the tool you have and the level to which you wish to restore it. If it's worn down a fair bit than you probably can't hurt it (value wise) whatever you do. But if it's in real nice shape and has a good stamp etc. It would make sense to practice on another first.
You can use an image hosting website to help upload pictures here. A few of those would help answer most if not all of your questions!
Lastly If you use a wire wheel on a drill with light but steady pressure you can achieve a nice patina with little risk of damage. Look forward to seeing some pics later!

Welcome, mate!

Can't wait to see photos of your hatchet. It sounds like an ideal tool to hone your restoration skills.

We can give you some ideas of how to bring it into shape but in the end it will it be a personal decision based on your own preferences.

always good to have more members from NZ and aus, hope to see you around here. like the others are saying you can use Imgur or other image hosting sites for this unless you're a member.

I would clean up the poll and and work it like a rented mule. Probably with a straight haft, the haft that is on it is a replacement. Not familiar with the company but it isn't a museum piece and if it has some collector value I don't think it would hurt it any, your not going to wear it out.

Interestingly enough, I found a slasher blade in my storage today, same brand, "Hedgehog" apparently...........

So my son has just started a building apprenticeship, so I might try and do this axe up for him for Christmas :)

Thank you again for the feedback and suggestion !
