Hello,

I am trying to find a gift for my adult son and have centered on traditional slipjoints in carbon steel. My quest has taken me to read most of these posts and view countless websites. That seems to be my main problem...that I've looked too long and I'm now hopelessly confused.

What I would like is a traditional pattern like a barlow, whittler, gunstock or cattleman type 1-3 blade folder. I love the looks of the celluloid material as well as bone...probably anything but stag or pearl. I am thinking of something in the area of 3.25" to 4" in length.

So, can anyone direct me towards a good source for a production, user grade, 1095 or other carbon steel bladed knife? I would like to keep it under $75 if possible as I have other gifts in mind. (he has finally come back to camping and I want to assist in getting him some gear)

I sincerely apologize for such a basic question, but I am at a loss right now. Even EBay has been unkind to me.

Thank you for any assistance.

What a thoughtful dad! Great Eastern Cutlery brands (Tidioute and Northfield) offer several choices in acrylics and 1095 carbon steel. Very well made and you should be able to find some around that price range or just a bit over that.

You can get him a Case Medium Stockman or Mini Trapper in CV for under $75 easily. They make great every day knives.

How about something from CASE in Chestnut Bone? A real cracker in my view, Swayback Jack or their compact Medium Stockman for instance?

If you don't object to D2 then Queen Cutlery offer a lot of nice patterns in their Amber Carved Stag Bone. Serpentine Jack,Medium Stockman plus others and all under your price ceiling.

Yeah, you could get a Queen #9 stockman, and with the 10-15 bucks left over, pay someone to reprofile and put a polished edge on it. Still a bargain!

I agree with the Chestnut Swayback Jack w/CV!! Great knife, well made, carbon blades and it feels good in the hand and in your pocket! It can be used for all of His cutting needs! Plus it looks good to!!
Good luck, I bet he'll like whatever his DAD gets him!! Way to go!

I recently purchased a new Queen amber bone stckman-its great..although it is bone-its craved to a decent standard-I see you mentioned the no stag..so this may not suit...

The link that Rusty showed us on Corey's Barlo...Im surprised such a nice knife is that reasonably priced!!...if I were you, I would look hard at that one :)

Please let us know what you end up buying, good luck with your search...you couldnt have asked in a better place-these guys realy know their stuff.

Bulldog via Queen makes a good carbon bladed slipjoint. I highly recommend a canoe pattern. It rides in the back pocket like it is not there. Other patterns may bruise your tushy. I carry other thicker handled knives in front pocket or cargo short pocket, but they have a chance of escaping when you do not want them to.

Dave, check your visitor messages. I sent you some links that I can't post in the thread.

Putting myself in your shoes (I have 3 adult sons) I would consider when they would carry it and what they would use it for. For everyday carry around the house and in an office the Case swayback jack in chestnut bone is a jewel. For camping, cooking and slightly heavier use, I would get a Moore Maker or Queen trapper. For all around use a case stockman 3 7/8- 4 14".
That is what I would get my boys & probably will. Nice thought but no matter how much he likes it, you will get more out of it than he will.

If you ask me a medium Case stockman cv shestnut mod 32 with the pen instead of spay blade. Very useful knife indeed, My all time favoritpattern of the ones I have tried.

I want to give everyone a sincere and heartfelt thank you for all your assistance and wonderful suggestions. Ed, I got the private messages and truly appreciate them. When I searched, I apparently was a magnet for crap. Thank you.

My son has spoken of getting two knives (who could only have two?). One for everyday carry and one being a clip style, one hand opener. I have a feeling I won't be able to stop at just one knife as a gift for him. Maybe I'll get one, see how that gets used, see if his wants/needs change and go from there. Why wouldn't a knife gift on Arbor Day be appropriate? Or any other holiday? :)

I think many of you have gotten that my thoughts are mostly that he and I can now spend more time outdoors, camping (he's also expressed an interest in hunting and we already go bass fishing together) and just being outside. His girlfriend is very outdoorsy and they are learning more skills together. I am just happy to be able to be a part of it.

Thank you again for the kindness shown for what is likely an annoying familiar question.

Dave

Hi Dave,
Theres no annoying questions around here. I would like to recommend a Mooremaker stockman at 3 1/4 long closed. 1095, and just a tad more than $75. Either that or a Queen, same pattern. Queen makes knives for Mooremaker. Stockmans are a good all around knife.

That certainly is NOT an annoying question at all:thumbup:

I think I am right in saying that the contributors here are only too keen to make suggestions and help each other out. To learn is to teach and to teach is to learn. We want to share experiences and pool knowledge.

All ideas have been good ones. I personally like the gunsÞock and stockman pattern myself. I really like Case but Queen is ok IF you are good at sharpening. (Which I'm still learning)

Good luck and you sound like a thoughtful and good father!
