OK, tomm is a big family Easter brunch. A friend of the family is a good deal older than me. We have kind of bonded on our mutual knife obsessions. He like's expensive modern folders, but he always admires my knives. (And I his...they are very nice, just not my style). He is a wealthy guy and very, very kind. He lost his son (about my age) about a year ago. His only son. That is relevant only if you take it as relevant. Anyway, I like this guy and I have decided to give him a knife. I have it narrowed down to the Case Trapper or Camco Barlow below. Now, they are both in excellent shape (crappy pics, sorry). The Case is NEW...used it to cut paper only. The Barlow is old but in really good condition. So, the question is...which one. I am leaning toward the Barlow. It is old and unique-ish...more my style. It is more one of "my" knives which I think would be appreciated, i.e. - you couldn't just buy one today. The Case...I mean, he could buy one tommorow. The Barlow is more rare. Which makes it seem more personal to me. But it is obviously not as "nice" a knife. In it's day, it was a cheapo, you know? But it's a nice little guy. So, I just thought I'd solicit some opinions. As I said, my gut says the Barlow will be more appreciated. But I am curious as to what y'all think. I also considered an old and old looking knife like I like, but I think the pristine condition will please him more than a patina'd and USED Old Timer or something. Here they are. Start your engines.

Hi Dan,
generosity is always something to appreciate...and this makes no exception :)
Maybe, considering where he comes from, the Case might be closer to "his" knives somehow, therefore resulting more "familiar".
But, since it's your gift, your choice comes first, and if you feel like giving him the Barlow, then think no more. I'm sure he will appreciate it alot.
Oh, and happy Easter of course :)

I like the idea of giving the one that is more personal to you, more your style. Like you said, it seems more of a gesture of friendship than giving one he could go out and buy.

Funny, I just gave "that" barlow away to a friend of mine last week.
Guess that gives my opinion.

God Bless,

I would also go with the barlow. The barlow seems to have more of a personal touch.

I agrEe. I'd go with the barlow. You know you can't afford what he might buy for himself. That barlow though has humility and friendship written all over it. (My sister and I gave my father a camco barlow over fifty years ago, and it probably meant more to him than a lot of the other stuff) Good luck, what ever you choose. Johnny

Thanks guys, Barlow it is. Although keep the opinions coming if you like. I enjoy everyones reasoning. :)

I too would go for the Barlow, as long as it is an easy open knife, nail breakers are not good gifts IMO.

I guess I'll echo the massed with the Barlow.
Thoughtful gift all the way around. Two beautiful knives to choose from too.

Go with the Barlow.

Anybody can buy a new knife; a "good" knife is a different story.

I agree with most of the guys above. Give him the Barlow. Because of its age, good condition and the fact that it´s still in very, very good condition.

Kind regards
Andi

Hey Dan, You just have to tell us of his reaction to the gift!, I always love the reaction I get for gifting a knife!

Oops, sorry. He was stoked. It was nice. He really appreciated it. And now, I have passed on the Slip Joint disease. ;)
