My boss, who is also a close friend surprised me at work yesterday by giving me a 73 scout. He's the kind of guy that would give you the shirt off his back. He's been an outstanding mentor and a great friend and I'd like to return the favor. He carries a single blade 73 Which he loves, hence the gifting of the same knife. His secondary is a Case peanut which he really likes because of its size and comfortable carry wearing gym/board shorts. I am torn between a few options and open to other suggestions as well. I wanted to give him another option in place of the peanut as its seen a lot of use for a long time. My initial thoughts are the Cayote or Beagle with the Beagle reminding me of a peanut. I though possibly a #25 which may be a bit bulkier, or maybe the new #14. I know it's hard to compare to knives not yet released but I do appreciate the insight and experience. Thank you for all the help-

Cool boss!

Great suggestions by bdev and mrknife. Another thought might be to have someone make him a custom leather pouch/sheath for his 73 for those times when he might prefer belt-carry to pocket-carry (say, when hiking or hunting).

If he really likes the 73, you might consider the GEC 83 Tascosa which is a scaled down 73 with a lockback. It's about 3 1/4" in the closed position.

Very good suggestion, I mirror it. The 83 is a really fine lockback and compact too.

But there are other fish in the sea apart from GEC of course. How about a CASE Mini Copperhead? I have one in Rootbeer Bone and would not part with it, nice thick scales and a useful wharncliffe as an alternative to the Peanut. Another really fine compact knife is Queen's No.26 Small Stockman, you get three great blades in a Penknife size frame, choose from bone, woods or horn a beautiful knife.

There's also a new Wharncliffe single blade Teardrop from CASE in cv Chestnut Bone that looks tempting:cool:

For just a little more than a GEC you could get him a Tuna Valley Tadpole. It's a 2.5" lil' jack knife with a clip and a pen in some very nice 154 CM steel with burnt or amber stag handles. It would make a very fine gift indeed.

Thank you all for the suggestions so far. It definitely gives me some great options to look at. I failed to mention in the original post that the 73 he carries is a liner lock. I was on my way out the door and in a hurry. That's not to say he wouldn't enjoy a lock back or any of the other great options listed here. If anyone else has suggestions please feel free to chime in.

why not replace the peanut that has seen so much use with another peanut, seems to be favored

I might go with an esquire as a peanut alternative...gives a different blade combo with the spear and coping blade.

So far I would say I'm leaning towards the 83 since it seems to have a great deal of positive feedback. I have never handled the 83 and was wondering if any of you that have both the 83 and 73 could could give me a few comparison points besides the obvious liner lock vs lock back and the 83 being a bit shorter. Did some searching and found lots of points on each but none that directly compare the two. I was able to track down a purple sage PPP and a blood orange camel bone 83, both seem like they would be a fine gift if I go that route. Another question I had is if anyone owns both a peanut and a Cayote? How do you feel they compare in size/functionality/ carry and what would you think of your Cayote in a two blade setup? The Tuna Valley Tadpole looks like a pretty nice knife as well if you were aiming for peanut style. Honestly I'd be really happy with any of the suggestions provided were they gifted to me. Thanks again everybody the help is much appreciated.

Here's a comparison pic (poor quality, sorry) with a Coyote, Peanut and a 83. As you can see the Coyote is about the same size but slimmer. The 83 is substantially larger. I think the beagle (two bladed Coyote) will be about the same thickness as the peanut. I haven't used the Coyote much yet, but I like how sharp the tip is. It already bit me once. I can't which is my favorite, I like them both.
