Gift from the father in law

My father in law had a gift for me when I went up to visit him this weekend. He said he had found it at a local Flea market for a pretty good price a week earlier. Not sure of the make, hopefully someone here can help out with that.

These were the only engravings I could find on the axe. Anyone have any idea of what they represent? From what I could make out it looks to be "Nook & ALT"

 
Beautiful broad hatchet. I love the shape. I can't identify it but I'd bet that someone here will.
