Gift idea

I have a friend that is a Civil Air Patrol Captian. He flies regularly, recently flying relief missions for all of these hurricanes. He flies over the water quite a bit. As an officer, he wears a uniform.

I would like some ideas on a knife that would be a good gift for his situation, especially if there was an accident or crash or if he was stranded somewhere. A large fixed blade wouldn't look to good hanging off his belt, unless he carried it in his flight bag. [remember these are private planes, no passangers]

I thought of a multi-tool, or possibly a good folder. If a folder, what blade length do you think would fit nice in a pocket, yet handle most situations? Persoanlly, I prefer a 3 1/2" blade. 4" gets too big for my hands to open quickly and usually starts to work out of my pockets when I sit. I guess this will turn into a personal preference, so I will weigh all advice.

As for a small fixed blade bang around knife, my first thought is the tried and true Air Force Survial knife or Cold Steel's SRK. So what are your thoughts?

Thank you, Teej

Doug Ritter, a survival professional, designed this permutation of the wildly popular Benchmade Griptilian. The knife is manufactured by Benchmade and marketed by Aeromedix.

It is light, strong, has the premier knife blade steel CPMS30V, easily opens locks and closes one-handed, has a strong black pocket clip and carries tip-up for quick deployment.

Doug Ritter has his own website, http://www.dougritter.com/, where he, as a survival instructor and pilot, goes into detail about plane crash survival. Interesting reading. He has several tips for pilot's equipment in addition to his knife.

I have been using one, the full sized model, for a year and I am delighted with it. It is a marvel.

All the best,

What about a Spyderco Pacific Salt or even a D'Allara 2 rescue knife? They are both excellent knives.
