I am looking to give my younger brother a smallish folding knife, mostly because I am tired of him borrowing mine. I was thinking something small and rather inexpensive would be good to begin with. Some of the models I'm considering:

Buck Odyssey or Access
Gerber EZ Out
Spyderfo Dragonfly or Meercat
Kershaw Vapor (a bit larger that I had in mind, but a great deal)
SOG Sculptura
Becker Machax (just kidding)

Please put all concerns of "hard use" or tacticality aside for this one, something small and pointy of decent quality will be just fine.

He's left handed, so something ambidextrous would be good.

To be honest the Sculptura looks like just what i'm looking for, but not having handled one I'm a bit wary of it.

Any advice or experiences with these or similar models would be appreciated.

Kershaw Chive. I just gave my girlfriends younger brother one and he loves it.

In the price range of the knives you mentioned the Spyderco Delica sounds like it might fit the bill. If you wanted to spend alittle more any of the BM axis locks would make him a happy camper. Good luck with your search.

Thanks for the suggestions. I actually considered a Chive, but decided that the assisted opening is not the way to go for a new user, if for no other reason than the legal hassles involved if it were to be considered an auto. I suppose that a plain edge Delica would be fairly inobtrusive.

Camillus EDC, and if you can find them the 154cm steel (for around $58.00 on the web) are the best. Great Gift knife.

SAK Huntsman for versatility/convenience. Otherwise I agree that the Delica is an excellent choice.

The SOG Sculptura is definately ambidextrous, but rather on the smallish side. I would recommend a lockback like the Spyderco Delica. The Delica can be opened/closed with either hand and the pocket clip can be reversed for left handed carry. It's 3 inch blade is just the right size for everyday tasks.

Get a Spyderco Dragonfly. Very ergonomic handle, very easy to open. I would stick with the SS handle, and that's only because I don't really like integral zytel clips.
Have fun, I'm sure whatever you pick, he'll enjoy it,
Matt

How about a Spyderco Native?...This is truely an ambidextrous folder (reversable pocket-clip, spydie hole...), and it's of very good quality.

I go along with glockman99’s recommendation, the Spyderco Native model is a good choice.
