My friend is leaving to go to the military next week, his bday is also next week, he asked me to get him a blade for his birthday so he can take it with him. He showed me 2 things he liked, large cold steel voyager and CRKT m21 spear point. He asked me not to spend more then 50$ (he actually said not to get him anything because he knows i just lost my job but i insisted on getting him something)

So what do you guys suggest for a 50$ knife for me to get for him to take with him.

Get him a nice multi-tool. People have the concept that they'll need a huge bowie for ghosting tangos and what not, but truth be told, it's a lot more latrine guarding and chilling then anything else. So, a nice Leatherman Wave would be great help to him. Good luck!

I never been in anything so i personally got no idea.
He does already have a sog powerlock though.

Ontario Rat-1, if they getting deployed this knife is affordable and if it gets stolen or lost it won't be a big deal. Plus it is a work horse. $30 bucks.

cheaper is probably good, considering he is the never oil never clean never maintain a knife and he will use it for all kinds of stuff he shouldn't lol.

USN long time ago, there might be a blade length restriction while in garrison...I don't know. I would consider a smaller usefull blade, a nice SAK maybe or a medium Cold Steel Voyager if he likes those. He can always buy something bigger at the PX later.

I have a CRKT M21 and it came wicked sharp. The one I have rides a little higher in my pocket than I would like for an EDC but there are several versions and some have different mounting of the clip so they sit lower. I also have an M16 tanto and I've had several other CRKT knives and they are all pretty good.

I don't what branch he's in, but when I went through army basic and ait in 2004, knives of any kind were not allowed. So he might want to check the regulations

Marines he is going marines

Can't bring knives to boot as a Marine either. They tell you to bring nothing to boot but the clothes on your back and $20 or less in spending money for the trip (and essential documentation). He'll have a 10 day break after boot to go home and can collect up that sort of thing before heading to MCT and then his MOS school.

so i can still give him it, he just needs to get it after boot?

Right, you can give it to him now, but he can't take it there. He can't have it at boot, so it'll have to sit somewhere til he comes home after he's done.

If he doesn't know what he can and can't bring, it would be helpful as a friend to tell him to go talk to his recruiter soon because what to bring is a pretty basic thing that he should know by now with his ship date so close. I go in 25 February, and I already know :)

Do you know his MOS (job)? That would help frame what sort of knife would be best for him. IMO, of the two listed, Cold Steel seems the better brand.

I've two son's that are Marines, and as previously mentioned, Multi-tools, though not as sexy as a traditional knife (fixed or folder) are MUCH MORE USEFUL in the course of their duties. That being said, a nice knife is always a nice gift as a reward for their service and accomplishments. The Ontario Rat folder is a great value, and not too expensive. I can speak from experience...KNIVES GET LOST in the military.
