My wife's cousin is turning 65 and is having a surprise party thrown in his honor. He's been carrying a badly made lagniole knife, one that is dangerous in that it's so hard to open. I don't know him well enough to want to fart around fixing that thing, so I figure on getting him something he'll like.

He is a lefty, so getting a knife that is lefty friendly or ambi would do the trick. It shouldn't be a flat out gentleman's knife, but nothing too big or ominous looking. Basic chores include boxes, cutting string, basic household type of cutting. Does anyone have any ideas with this criteria?

any of the axis lock would be fine...

totally ambi and you can change the pocket clip to the other side...

my vote goes to the mini-grip...

I like the Kershaw Leek...around that price, assisted opening that would work for a lefty, good solid knife that feels good in the hand. I've got the Rainbow but that may be to much for him! They come in black.

As far as knives for my dad, if it does not have stag scales on it it is not really a pocket knife!

I go along with point44's suggestion one of the axis lock benchmades griptilian or small tsek

How about one of the new Grey scale Calypso jrs that are on the way?

Spyderco outlet has a beautiful J.D. Smith VG10 clip point lockback for $49.95 including shipping! I know, 'cuz I have one....:)

How about a Queen SJ in D2?
They've got a bunch of patterns. I have the Toothpick and Canoe with carved bone scales. The Canoe is a great EDC, I use the small blade for 'dirty' jobs and the large blade for food. You can spread some mustard with that canoe paddle ;)

See them at knifecenter.com

FRN Native/Delica/Endura would do rather nicely.
Or a Kiwi SS at approx 50USD.

The Spydie Smith would be awesome, but I can't find it on the site so maybe they sold out? If he wouldn't use the clip, Spydie has the Herbst on sale for $49.95, that's classy and big enough to do most jobs. No way you will find more quality for $50! It's hard to find other folders with leftie clip options at that price, other than the excellent Spydie Delica & soon-to-arrive Grey Calypso Jr., but if he doesn't use the clip then CRKT has some nice stuff like the Tighe Tac.

Thanks for some nice ideas. I will check around to see who has these to look at. If there are a few more knife ideas, let me know.

How about a good old Buck lockback, maybe the smaller Prince model? If you have a local brick and morter, you may find one with stag handles around $50.

How about a SAK? The Soldier or Tinker would be excellent choices.
Or....one of Leatherman's Juice models. The C2 would be a very handy EDC.
