WoodCraft is an excellent source for exotic woods for handles. They also sell West Systems epoxy.

if he's forging on an anvil, he'll likely use non-stainless steel...

so 80crv2 would be my choice of bar stock ; ) .... 1/8" or 3/16" thick... and 2 inches wide is generally good

Does he have a forge? Even if he doesn’t plan on “forging” his knives, and only using “knife blanks” and “stock removal”; seems like he would need a forge for heat treat. I think knife blanks would be a waste of money at this point. Let him get his feet wet first on some old farrier rasps. Call around some farriers; they should be happy to give away their used rasps.

Just read the part about the torch and the forge, not sure how those go together. Making a knife is going to take some effort on his part. He’s not ready for “knife blanks”

I bought the anvil because I thought that’s what he needed to make knives.

I previously got him a torch so he could build his own forge.

what you said was he already had an anvil and a hammer... which would lead us to believe he's actually used them, (which would mean he has a forge also)...

if these are all net new things... then yeah, like other people said it's best to just find out what he needs

my answer was based on him already being setup to forge knives, NOT on someone literally starting from scratch
