I saw a book at Barnes Noble today called Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story. With this reveiw, on the cover, "A surgeon's long journey from KNIFE WIELDING STREETFIGHTER to master of the scapel" by Readers Digest. It's supposed to be the story of a troubled innercity kid. Who turns his life around with God's help and becomes the director of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins University at age 33.
Good for him and his patients, too bad Readers Digest and the publisher used such a sensational blurb to promote the book

On a lighter note did anyone see Malcolm in the Middle on Sunday? Malcolm has his Exacto Knife (to cut puzzle pieces)taken away by his friend's hyper-protective Mom.
I guess I need to stop procrastnating and join the AKTI.

Yeah, it was great. Maybe it planted a seed that people who exclaim "Is that a SWITCHBLADE?" and take away your knife are stupid people. Only bad thing is implication that switchblade is bad, but come on--that really is what she would say. Besides, that's the funniest show in years and the writers seem to have good BS-clearing abilities. I love it.

Thanks Gwinnydapooh, I forgot her line "Is that a switchblade?" that was great. And yes I think the show is very funny

My wife works as a special events coordinator for a private Christian school system in Detroit, and they recently hosted Dr. Carson to visit the campuses and speak to the kids about achievment and goals and the importance of learning (not necessarily "education"). Dr. Carson is originally from Detroit, and realized in his rowdy youth that faith and morals can help him achieve more than a police record, so it was a great tie-in that he visit and speak to the kids. He's a great speaker, warm, and generous with his time, with a fascinating background and career, and I read his book while my wife was organizing the event. In fact, children's versions of the book were given to each kid in the school as a reminder of what hard work and cultivating inner talents can accomplish.

After meeting him myself, I'm really sorry to hear about RD running such a sensationalized heading. It's a disservice to all he's done since his early days on the streets of Detroit.

As far as Malcolm, didn you expect any less of his friend's parents? These are the type of people we don't ever want to hold public office. Sheesh!
