A young man I know has just finished EMT training and will be assigned to the 25ID. If deployed does anyone think this will serve him well in Afghanistan.

I'd go with a BK7 instead, but yes a fixed blade would absolutely be a well received tool.

My choice was for a few reasons. I believe the lmf ii was designed to get out of aircraft (choppers) and I hope if flown in and an accident occurs (hopefully not) he would maybe have a better chance to get out. Another reason is for him to use it on downed aircraft he might be called on to help with. Its one of the earlier models a friend brought back from Iraq and gifted to me. He'll have an M4 and M9 Beretta, so it's not so much for a combat knife though it seems to be built well enough for it. My army days are well over and I'd like to see the kid have something purpose driven instead of hype. I have a bk2 and love it I really don't know that much about the bk7, does it come with the sharpener and anchor points on the sheath like the lmf ii.

The Gerber was designed to replace the Ontario ASEK for the Air Force. ASEK stands for Aircrew Survival and Egress Knife, so yes, it was designed to get out of downed aircraft. I've read a lot of reviews on the LMF-II from military personnel and they are almost all positive.

Most of you negativity on the LMF2 comes from the outdoor crowd. The blade is too thick for a lot of things. I have one and like it but the geometry of the blade is all wrong for me. It is WAY TOO HEAVY and that would be my concern for a GI. Now as a tool to take on deployment, I think I'd feel quite well equiped with one...no question about that...no question the thing is a beast that would probably take everything a GI could dish out and come back for more. If I were humping a very long way, I might find it too heavy. Having never served in the armed forces, I will ultimately have to rely on others who have had the privilege...I have not.

My understanding is that they are (or once were) rather common items in the PX. I guess where I am going is this: First up, the Army is funny about knives these days I guess. No guarantee he'll be able to carry it. Secondly, the thing is not cheap exactly...not Randall money but not cheap. There are other blades of similar construction that would probably serve him as well or better for about the same money. ESEE, Becker come to top of mind.

But it would most certainly be a very thoughtful gift and it is a very cool knife...I have one...it's my vehicle knife...right there in my toolbox everyday right with me.

Price fortunately is not a concern since I already own it. As I stated above it was gifted to me, and what better way to pay it forward then to gift it to another soldier. I hope it's a good choice for his possible needs. I don't have the leg straps or the seat belt cutter as they lost in Iraq, I guess if he needs those he can find something. When I was in the best people to know were cooks, medics and chopper pilots they always had things to trade, he should be able to get hooked up quick.
