They are hard knives to beat for $39.99!

A new dimension in folding knives. The TITAN represents one of Dr. Fred Carter's and GIGAND Knives latest collaborations. Following in the tradition of the Colored Spectrum's, the Gigand Multi-Colored Titans are an attractive aluminum alternative to the titanium version the TITAN.

The 3 1/8" blade is made of ATS-34 stainless steel, vacuum heat-treated to a Rockwell RC59-60 for extreme edge durability. The TITAN is available with either a half-serrated or plain edge blade.

Titan
FC-9852AL
Length, Open: 7.5"
Length, Closed: 4.5"
Blade Length: 3.125"
Blade Material: ATS-34
Handle Material: Aluminum
Locking Method: Liner Lock
Opening Method: Thumb Stud
Clip: Yes
Weight: 3 oz

The TITAN has all of the features that the other Fred Carter designed GIGAND Knives display. The spring lock is located in a recess CNC machined into the handle so there is no liner needed, saving both weight and thickness. A ball bearing detent keeps the blade in the closed position. An adjustable pivot screw of a unique design, allowing the user to customize the blade's tension to his or her own preferences. A special spanner wrench to fit the pivot screw is included. The blade rides on special nickel alloy bearings, for a super smooth, one hand opening and closing.

Fred Carter designed this knife so it could be taken apart and reassembled without damaging any screw threads. Most knife makers do not want their products disassembled, even though they use screws instead of pins, it means that there is a good chance that the user will strip the threads in the screw holes as the screws frequently thread into either plastic or soft aluminum. Some knife makers void any warranty if one of their knives is disassembled by anyone other than themselves. Fred Carter makes sure all assembly screws thread only into stainless steel.

Are the blades on the Gigand Multi-Colored Titans made from ATS-34?

Gigand's web site states that only the titanium models have ATS-34 blades and all other Titan models have AUS-8A blades.

Did they change their plans?

I have the titanium handled model and it's very nice. If the colored versions follow the same design and quality standards, then they should be also pretty good. The locking bar locks in the left quarter or so of the blade tang leaving plenty of room for wear, the pivot screws haven't loosened on me (unlike the Spectrums), the ATS-34 blade was sharp and cuts very well and had no blade play.

What I don't like is the thumb stud is a bit too beefy -- I got used to it, but in the beginning, it bit too much of my thumb. Also, the pocket clip (tip down) exposes a bit too much of the knife for my tastes. Easier to take out, yes, but it's a bit clunky.

Overall, the titanium model was worth my money (~$35). It's no longer a daily carry, but it's a nice piece for the collection. I have some of Gigand's AUS8 knives, too, and they do pretty good work.

oopss..

Only the solid Ti handled ones have ATS-34. All the others have AUS-8. I do have some protoypes that Paul (Gigand owner) sent me that had ATS-34 blades. Gigand is going through some changes so I am not sure what the future holds. Stay tuned.
