In my search for a relatively low priced folder I have come across the Gigand brand.
They look and sound almost too good to be true. Anyone with any experience or comments - e.g. strengths and/or weaknesses?

Gigand is a Taiwanese knife manufacturer. They're known to produce good quality knives designed by Fred Carter. They also manufacture knives for other companies as well. Check out their website: www.gigand.com

First of all, welcome to Bladeforums! I have a Gigand Spectrum LT with carbon fiber scales and I really like it. Here's a quick run-down on the pros and cons from my vantage point.

Pros: Nice design, solid lockup (passes spine whack test, if that matters to you), carbon fiber is nicely done, came shaving sharp, good fit and finish, anodizing is done well, even grinds, no blade play up-down or side-to-side.

Cons: Moderately smooth action (i.e., not "silky smooth") , thumb stud hits the side of the frame, clip is positioned sort of low so that it rides pretty high in your pocket.

All in all it's certainly worth what I paid for it. Hope that helps. Keep in mind that my experiences represent a sample size of one. :) I'm sure others will post with their experiences. If you're trying to find a reasonably priced folder, CRKT might be another company to look at in addition to Gigand. Happy hunting...

Thanks Mark,
You speak a language that I understand. A breath of fresh air!

Oupa,

I have handled quite a few Gigands and not once have I come across one that was of poor quality. They are very good knives for the money. Light, sharp, and well made. I think they offer a good bang for your buck.

P.S. WELCOME to bladeforums!!!

I agree with the above replies. My Gigand was used to cut tires from a hand cart carrying acetylene and O2 bottles w/o damage. The one I had said the blade was cryo treated. It certainly seemed better than other blades Ive handled. They also have one of the most solid feeling lockups I have seen in a linerlock. I typically dont whack the knives I have, but it didnt wiggle or wobble in any direction.

Many thanks. You have all been a great help.
It is difficult when you live in a country that is poorly serviced by knife dealers and you cannot go out and actually "feel" the blade. You end up having to cut through all the bullshit and as you all would know - as a rule manufacturers and dealers would not admit to a product of lesser value or quality!

I used to have a Spectrum, but I had to sell it to somebody who needed it more than I. It is an extremely light knive with very smooth action and very well made. I had some doubts about its strenght, but never got to use it. I have known several to have problems with loosening pivot screws, but that could probably be fixed with loctite. For the price a very nice piece.

Regards Jan
