I AM NEW TO KNIFE COLLECTING..I AM NOT LOOKING TO COLLECT FOR FUTURE TRADING OF EXPENSIVE KNIVES ONLY TO COLLECT FOR MYSELF. CAN SOMEONE TELL ME IF GIL HIBBEN KNIVES ARE WORTH THE PURCHASE. AND IF ANY OTHER MAKERS ARE BETTER OR WORSE..ID APPRECIATE THE HELP.

THANKS

Are you talking about the Fantasy pieces from United Cutlery?

If you are buying for looks and display purposes then maybe.

As recently pointed out there seem to be other Hibben products that seem like decent "real" user knives.

Like Dave H said, if you are buying for show only, his pieces are pretty good. He does make some good throwers though, and they don't cost much. BTW, welcome to the forums. Something to consider though, when you type in all caps, it's considered to be yelling or using a harsh tone.:)

Welcome to the forums.

Most of us start in the same place. There are makers out their producing decorative sword like items, and others producing real combat swords. The difference in quality and performance is reflected in the price. Given a choice it would be generally better to buy a single nice sword from someone like Del Tin then to own a dozen wall hangers that you will regret owning later on.

Decorative swords and knives are just that. They are often unsafe to use. Even a minor shock can send pieces flying dangerously in all directions. The bottom line is that they will not grow with you as your interest develops.

I got to meet Mr. Hibben at the Nordic Knives show this past year. While there were certainly Fantasy knives on his table, there were some other really fine "traditional" knives as well. There was a drop point folder with white linen micarta slabe and a Rhino scrimshaw on it that was really cool and seemed like a deal at $600.00. I wish I'd bought it, but $600.00 seemed like a lot of money at the time. There was also an awesome, and I do mean awesome, sub hilt fighter with a 7.5" blade and a really beautiful scantily clad female scrimed on it's ivory handle as well. That was a bit pricier as I recall, about $1100.00.

It looks like besides his fantasy collaborations with United, he still likes to make real nice custom knives.
