Hello
I am new to this forum and am not sure if I am posting in the correct area. I am wondering if anyone here has any knowledge of the Gill Hibben old West toothpick sold by United Cutlery. I don't want a bunch of posts about "united cutlery garbage" or "Chinese junk" or which knife is better and that sort of thing, I am simply asking if anyone here has ever had one and used it, and how they liked it. If it held up reasonably well or if it fell apart right away. Or if anyone knows where I could find a proper review of it from someone who has used/tested it, that would be helpful also.

I own other Puma's and Benchmades and various other knives that I know are better quality, but I really like the look and feel of this knife. Now, if anyone happens to know of a knife similar to this one in size and style (preferably less shiny) that is of superior quality without breaking the bank, I would be happy to know.

Thanks in advance for any info you guys can give me.

Well I'm sure if you gonna get the one from Mr. Hibben it will hold up more than reasonably and will fell right right away

The knives I've seen and handled from United Cutlery were wallhangers, plain and simple. No matter how good they look or feel, they're not made for actual use. Granted, I have not handled the specific knife you are asking about, so it is possible for it to be the exception.

It's a great clean classic design. That being said, it sells for $90 (including leather sheath) and is Aus-6 and made in China. If you need a wall hanger this might be it.

Gil Hibben also offers this knife on his site in 440, made by him for $1650. Given that he has won a number of awards, I'd guess that this knife might be awesome. This might hold it's value and even go up.

If you've got some time to wait, the Randall #13 might be the best of the bunch and is only $640

Let us know which one you choose to get. :)

Meh, I haven't handled it but pretty much all the Gil Hibben production stuff I've seen have been wallhangers. It's possible it could be functional, unlikely, but who knows. Someone would have to check out the tang and how it's attached to the handle.

Hey guys, I've got one of these things that was a gift from a dude who's wife bought him one and so did his sister as a Christmas present. He gave it to me stating very clearly that he would not be responsible for any damages incurred by me actually using the thing. Well, I take it camping with me, use it to clear little saplings and whatnot from the campsite when I get there, sharpen sticks for hotdogs and marshmallows. I've even used it to clean a couple of fish. Would I use it to chop down a tree...even a small one, heck no. But it's fun to carry, and I just love the looks on the kids faces when I go into the fish house with my bluegills and crappies and start to fillet them out with this knife. They are just blown away by the big knife, it makes them smile and it makes me smile thinking about the stories they are telling their moms and dads when they get back to their campsites. It's a fun knife, it's a big knife, and it's a flashy knife. It works for small tasks because it's heavy and pretty sharp, it's not a Busse, or a TOPS Tracker or even an ESEE Junglas, but it's fun to use...and I like it for that reason alone. I wouldn't pay 90 bucks for it, but I'd gladly pay the 12.50 or whatever it cost to ship it to me again if it ever falls apart if I find someone else who wants to get rid of one. Sometimes you just need a knife that makes you feel good when using it, and that's exactly what this one does for me...give it a try sometime, you just might like it.
