Has anyone had any experience with the blackwood that Gilmer sells? For $210 they have a wholesale package of about 60 pounds. Is it any good? If so, anyone interested in splitting an order?

Lets try and keep business deals out of Shop talk. Buy the lot and sell the extra on The Exchange.

Gilmer's wood is good stuff. Their blackwood bundles is usually cut-offs, seconds, and shorts, from making clarinets and oboes. While it isn't right for musical instruments, it is superb for knife handles.

Thanks for the reply. I didn't realize I had crossed the line. I am not interested in making a profit, and that is a LOT of wood.

Not a big deal. Group buys are occasionally discussed here, but it is usually a much larger buy that a couple hundred dollars.

Like I said, buy the lot, sort out what you need/like....and sell the rest.

FWIW, I benefited from some blackwood that Greg (tryppyr) bought- he sent me a good bit of it, I believe he got it from Gilmer. It's beautiful stuff, I've had nothing but fun (in a challenging way) working with it.

I got some years ago. Funny thing is in their description they say the wood was rejected for musical instrument mfg because it had too much figure. Great for knifemakers. Only problem is that most billets are 1 3/8" x 1 3/8". On the smaller size for us but still usable.

Like Stacey mentioned, Gilmer is a first rate co. If you have a problem they will make it right.

Their blackwood bundle is a bargain. I have purchased them a few times.
You will have a lot of waste when you trim away the checks and bug holes.
But....even if 2/3 is not suitable for handle material you are still getting a bargain.

The pieces will almost all be under 1&1/2" wide and they are not cut square so after truing them up they will average 1&1/4".
Great stuff for kitchen knives and other smaller handle knives.
