hi all,
i'm new to all of this and was wondering if the above blade is decent? I have sin this gin-1 on a number of knives and I don't know anything about it, i've done searches to no avail except to find out what knives this blade is on. Any help would be appreciated.

I have a Spyderco Police in Gin-1 and I like it very much. it holds an edge very well and isn't hard to sharpen. I have never had a problem with it staining, corroding or rusting. So all-in-all, Gin-1 is a pretty darn good stainless steel, as far as I am concerned.

Edited to add:

Welcome to BladeForums Keith, we can always use more Keiths around here. :)

My Gin 1 Native has given me very good service thus far.

Easy to sharpen and very rust and corrosion resistant in my experience. I use my Native mostly in the kitchen for food prep.

Touch ups on the 204 Sharpmaker keep it shaving sharp.

I just bought a bunch of flashlights and now i'm off to buy some knives, checking ebay and some online places. I've been looking at
Al Mar sere 2000
benchmade the 940 d2 cf
microtech lccma 2002 carbon fiber
money burns a hole in my pocket ( singing those words as I write )
If flashlights can be addictive, knives have a limitless potential.
ooh no

Welcome to the forums keithhr!! You have pretty good taste in knives. I have all three you have listed and they are all top notch!! You'll be very happy with them.

that's what I've been doing for the last few days, trying to sort out what's important. I was hung up on anodised aluminum handles but have come to the conclusion that an edc knife should be less prone to mark up and I think the different hard composite handles might do it better. Up until now the nices knife I had was a Kershaw wildcat ridge and a Browning hunters skinning knife. This knife thing is going to wind up being one knifes too manky and a thousand is not enough ( AA saying adapted for this forum ) I could see myself being a knife collector if I didn't excercise a great deal of self control. But I'll report back soon on how I did.

Welcome kieth..

As a warning, I must inform you that this will not stop with knives and flashlights... there are also guns, patrol packs and rucksacks, watches, cars and motorcycles... along with the occasional cool stuff for significant others...

BE WARNED NOW...
THIS IS THE BEGINNING OF YOUR DOWNWARD SPIRAL INTO POVERTY!!!
BUT, YOU WILL HAVE COOL STUFF...

Knives are terribly addicting. :) I've actually held off the impulse to buy anything new within the last few days, but there's a gun & knife show today right down the road so I don't know how I'll hold up.

Another expensive hobby I've just taken up is Photography. Good god. This can match my knife spending in no time. Less than 3 weeks and I have over $1500 into it, an that's just the camera, memory storage, and some lenses/filters. But once I learn it a bit better, I plan to take some more pictures of....what else? My knife collection. :D

you are all correct and the worst part is that knives can be quite beautiful and i've been really lusting after the microtech lcc carbon fiber scales handled models and I've never even seen one. I did buy a couple of cameras last year, a really cool olympus c-2100 with a 10x optical zoom with image stabilization (and an Oly d-520). I would like to know if my thinking was correct with alumimum based handled models would be more difficult to keep pristine as an edc?

Well, my experience is with a Spyderco Salsa, and after having gone on 3 passarounds and maybe 40+ people, there definitely was some wear on the handle, but it certainly wasn't that bad. I'd estimate the finish was still 90% or better.

would the carbon fiber microtech lcc handles be less prone to showing marks? This forum is awesome with all the knowledgeable people contributing.

actually, if you're going to use it as an edc, don't worry about the marks etc
there's practically no way you can keep the knife LNIB if you're going to be using it
so just go for whatever you like, that'll serve you just fine
