Friday night we were out to dinner, and I had a proper Martini, my first. But it had blue cheese stuffed olives, so I suspect the cheese may have masked the real flavor. I think more research is in order ( we are trained professionals, don't try this at home. Might even call for a Design of Experiments...hmmm, how many factors? Gin, vermouth, shaken, stirred, up, rocks, olives... plus replicates... could be a lot of runs...)

Without going crazy on expensive Gin, what are some good brands to try? Is there a equivalent to Tito's Vodka in Gin?

Tanguueray 10 is my first choice, Bombay Saphire is always great. The Blue Cheese stuffed Olives only add to the flavor. Enjoy.

Don't know about gin, Guy! My roomie always drank Bombay Sapphire, said it was the best. I personally would use vodka--and probably Tito's! :D

A good solid Gin is the Tanquarey. Is good in a gin and tonic and the other drinks like your martini.

My favorite is the Bombay Sapphire for gin/tonic...but it quite a complex flavor of pine needles/pineberries/all the stuff they put it in for flavor. It may be a bit much for a beginner martini and overwhelm the other flavors.

QFT I really like Bombay but like Zen said it has alot going on it it and I too really like it for Gin/Tonic.

I also like Tang 10 and its turned out some pretty good Martini's for me, and I dont usually like Martini's.

I have never had Tito's Vodka...is it better than Belvadere or Gray Goose? Or just different?

I prefer regular Tanqueray. It has the nice gin bite, without being overly floral. I'd stay away from the newer gins that have a hundred ingredients in them.

For a true martini, you just let the shadow of the vermouth bottle fall over the shaker. Stirred, you don't want to shake it and bruise the gin. And no fruit.

Tang 10 is also my regular (though we're only talking 3-4 times a year, Bourbon is my regular fare).

But for something special and unusual try Anchor's Junipero. For Gin, it's pretty amazing stuff.

I use to drink Bombay Sapphire. :foot:

Some bike racing friends and I use to have an “end of life” party each year when we lost daylight savings time; which meant that after work we were stuck riding indoors on trainers for the winter. The party consisted of drinking Sapphire Martinis all night. So one year after maybe two hours worth of Sapphires I went into the back of my house and tried to ride my bike on the rollers with a business suit and street shoes on. I fell off a few times but didn’t feel a thing.

Long story short… I woke up the next day and found that I had three broken ribs. I don’t think I have had gin since. :o :o

I know you said nothing expensive, but try hendrick's

I like hendricks its a very unique gin; im not so sure why. You can pick it up cheap at trader joes For a more traditional gin i like tanq and no 10, their lime one is interesting too.
