Giraffe Bone EDC and SCABS Sheath Questions

Hello everyone... I'm relatively new here (been a lurker for a while though). I have a couple of noob questions... I am getting a custom shop SCABS with giraffe bone.

1. Giraffe Bone as an EDC... Any cons?

2. Sheath options for SCABS, what do y'all recommend? I have to admit, I had a strong preference for Kydex until I saw what its doing to my satin finish on my SAR6 LE. I have used my SAR 6 to cut thru serious tree and yet, there's more wear, tear, and scarring from the kydex sheath than anything else. So, what leather options might everyone recommend? Or are there any kydex sheaths out there that don't mark your blade up from simple use?

Any and all assistance will be appreciated and pics of Giraffe Bone EDC users or SCABS sheaths are a plus!

heres my giraffe bone game warden, this thing is hollow ground and super sharp. i love the weight of the natural bone, its very satisfying. i think the bone does well in edc, ive never chopped with my little game warden, except for in the kitchen so i can t speak on that , but for general cutting it is sweet(the only con i can think of is maybe its smooth and not as grippy as micarta or g10, but it is a minimal con as i have had no problems), i would go with leather for you pants , check out either chuddy bear leather, or leathermans work , they are both top craftsman. dont forget to post pics of your new beauty when you get her, especially shots of her in use :)
congrats on the score brother.

Im with ya brother-love my scabs,lcabs,cabs whatever on that day for EDC- but personally I don't think there is an absolute solution for this re: sheaths. Both leather and kydex will cause damage in the long run. If the kydex is made really well and enough spacing is used during the template creation- you can sometimes have a nice fit without all the wear+tear. There are great makers for both on this forum-as mentioned. Ive taken my sar6 outa kydex for the same reason you mentioned though. More scuffed up from Kydex then from actual usage. If you leave something in leather though-the oils and moisture from the leather itself will cause problems-albeit, at some time in the future. I try to sheath a few that I EDC-not caring so much about the damage, but anything nice now goes in the "safe" and without cardboard or anything. Love the giraffe bone abs as well that are out there. I know two gents who have some nice ones for sale now. The giraffe bone in general is always only going to have the one pro over anything else. It sure is prettier. It, however, is never going to be as tough and as durable to the elements and everything you ever throw at it versus the black paper micarta that comes with the recent ABS. The Giraffe bone I think will handle quite well and it is durable, but just like stabilized wood, natural materials etc- they simply are not as tough and abuse free as any flavor of man made-micarta, G10, linen etc. If my life depended on it, id always want to harness whatever the best technology is-in this case, I don't even think its a close competition-aside from aesthetics/looks. Just my .02 though. Love that Custom Shop Luke. Really beautiful GW man.

Here is my CABS. It has been used in a mashed cat kydex sheath. There is markings on it from the sheath, but I look at it that edc items should be able to handle the abuse and cosmetics doesn't mater. I like how I can pull it out and put it back in very easily with out straps.
I have had to sharpen it a few times already, but when you are cutting through mud, rocks, and roots, it is going to dull.

Great question about the bone - I have been wondering the same thing - Here is a comment I found:

Giraffe bone is highly prized for knife handles because it is extremely dense and very strong. You can imagine that Giraffes would need very strong bones in order to carry their great size and weight on those spindly legs. Giraffe bone is often stabilized and injected with colored dyes.

As far as a sheath goes - grit inside of a sheath will scratch the blade no matter if it's a leather sheath or kydex - If it's an EDC, not sure a few scratches matter anyway

Congrats on the Boner :thumbup::D

I haven't put a scratch on the stabilized maple handle on my EDC Boss St. Just imagine if it was stabilized bone!

what about mammoth tooth? (no, i don't plan on EDCing a blade w/mammoth tooth, i just wondered how strong/durable they are... )

They were plant-eaters, so no bone-chomping.

Seriously, the are stabilized with resin, like epoxy. I wouldn't expect any issues.

I really do appreciate all the helpful information and pics. It just arrived yesterday afternoon, so I will try and get some photos up soon. I really do love this SCABS design. Anyone with some SCABS sheath pics?
