I thought a while back I saw on the buck website a scale option on the skinning knife of giraffe bone.. I havent seen it in a while. Why did they pull the giraffe scales? After a quick Google search I've seen pictures of 110 style giraffe scales knife. I'm curious. Why doesnt buck offer giraffe bone scales? Especially on a 110.

$$$$ not enough folks wanted to pay the price. So it's gone!

Stealing the thread in a slightly different direction. Other than being sourced from an exotic animal, is there anything special or different about Giraffe bone than other types of bone used on knife handles?

I only ever remember the 532 giraffe bone. I got one on the web special at a great price.

I would think it is more dense than other bone (or most other) since it needs to be stronger than most others to support that height/weight. Just a guess as to why it's "special".

I also have one of the 532's, nice knife.

Would also guess it went away since people didn't want to pay for it. Or, maybe they don't like working with bone much. I don't know.

You guys answered your own question. Giraffe bone considered top of the heap of bone scales for strength, hence doesn't split as easily.. 300

Interesting. Kinda of figured that the lack of demand would make buck pull the giraffe bone scales. Its unfortunate that I now giraffe bone is considered the the best bone scale. It makes me want a giraffe bone scale even more now. Imafrits that one hell of a knife.

goatee, you can get your knife fitted with G bone scales aftermarket there are many custom folks who would be happy to do this for you.

I only have one factory Buck knife that came with G bone scales. It is a Alpha Dorado and is a real looker, I also wish more Buck knives would be issued with that scale.

Come on Dave,

Don't tease us with words, photo's please:thumbup:.

Several of my Arno Bernard (Sr) and his son, A.B. Jr, fixed blades have giraffe bone handles. They make them in their homeland, Bethlehem, South Africa, where the material is more easily found. They also use croc hide, sheep horn, mammoth ivory and molars, spalted woods, sambar stag, and even paua abalone for handles. Their knives are still bargains in the semi-custom world and include full length tapered blades of Bohler N690 steel and come with cape buffalo hide sheaths. They range from his "Bush Babies" series, from ~$140 up in size and price. I bought a 'Dassie' with giraffe shinbone handle from A.B. Sr. himself at BLADE 2013. I had met him at the previous BLADE show - super nice folks! BTW, I cut the belt loop off the Dassie - at 5" OAL/2.6" blade, it makes a great pocketable fb - in a cape buffalo sheath.

I've seen 110's in sambar stag, what was supposed to be snakewood, and other woods - giraffe bone would be neat!
