Hi Buck to Buck,

hi jb4570
ya thats all ive seen is the pics on ebay too someone on here must have one of either the kalinga, dagger or bowie or the ? 970 ? damascus dagger from a couple of years ago had the girraffe bone too ive only seen pics on ebay of those too but i think ill get one of these first because i really like the damascus so if anyone has one of these four knives your opinion and pics would be quite welcome

I saw the "Giraffe bone" and my ears perked up... :D

Just for comparison, at Texas Knifemakers Supply, Water Buffalo Horn scale material goes for $12.95 a pair...Stag is $14.95 a pair...Kudu is $22.95...and Giraffe bone is $75.00 a pair...

And that's just the scale blanks; not finished or fitted...

If you're collecting Giraffe bone knives, you are into serious $$$...(IMHO)... ;)

Yeah, me too. I thought someone was asking about me. :p

Those sets look really cool and I would like to see a set and get an opinion also. Maybe after JB4570 posts a pic of his stag Kalinga (sorry to jack the thread).

...thread...about giraffe bone, it has quite a few replies and makes for interesting reading...

Yes it does, and with fascinating pics, too...I especially like the fact that both pretty and fugly specimens are shown...To my prejudiced eye, the brown veined GB looks really nice...but...it doesn't look any different than Elk stag dyed brown...which is quite a bit cheaper...

...i realized i have to get some mammoth now:eek: it never ends does it

Wait until you see a nice handled Fosselized Gorilla Snot knife...it'll knock your eyes out... ;)

whats the gorilla snot knife ?

I don't have a good digicamera, or I'd take a pic...

You know that scene in "Jurassic Park" where they show the mosquito trapped in the amber??? Fosselized Gorilla Snot is kinda like that, only darker; and instead of a mosquito, sometimes you can see a piece of fingernail in it...

Here's a scale sample from a knifemaking supply house -

KUDU.jpg

It's really beautiful material, rich and warm when buffed out...

Get one of each. ;)

Now I know some are reading this and thinking "Ugh! Gorilla snot! ewww!"...But I'd rather grab a Gorilla Snot [fossilized, you understand] knife than a Walrus penis knife!* You don't know what the dude's been doing with that! :grumpy:

4) "Nature of the animal... well since I have seen a fossil walrus penis used as a sword handle nothing more will shock me."[/size]

I just picked up a kalinga with g-handle. The store had two to choose from, so I picked the lower number. I basically like the handle, though it may be a little light in color. I paid $325 and saw the same knife (now sold) on line with stag handle for $175 to show the cost difference for g-bone.

Not sure why Giraffe bone varies so much in price? Typically i've seen it about the same price as Stag. Don't recall her name, but a woman that sells great supplies at some shows i've attended in New England (has connections in Africa) sold awesome pairs of grips in stabilized Giraffe bone in the $30 - $40 range. That was last year however. It was so nice I bought a set that looked remarkably similar to Mammoth Tusk.

If you want to see some really nice material, check out Mammoth tooth and dinosaur bone too.
