Looks like another incident of the usefulness of spydie knives.
My friend's GF works as a pastor in Jakarta and he gave her an Alu Cricket some years ago. Recently she was driving in Jakarta, and stopped at an intersection while talking on her mobile phone. Sure enough, 4 street "toughs" ran up to her car and started pounding on it, gesturing for her to give them her mobile phone. She pretended to drop it, then took out her Cricket and flicked it open. Upon viewing the ridiculously cute small blade, the 4 "toughs" ran away.
Now, I know that a good sub two inch blade, when handled properly, can inflict significant damage on a person, but I'll bet your average indon street tough doesn't know that, so I'm surprised that brandishing a Cricket had that result. Maybe it was the surprise.
Anyway, I suggested to my friend that we get her a more substantial folder, like the Chinook 2(since she likes the hole and is comfy with folders), for her next accessory upgrade. Even if she doesn't wear it, she can just keep it in her car. I initally thought of those Coldsteel 5-6 inch folders, but they would be tough for a girl to thumb open while seated in a car. Those are more of a wrist-flick open style.
Anyway, I'm glad that her little spydie came in useful, and it just proves that all women should carry a knife if they can't carry a firearm. My sister and wife both always carry spydies and I feel comfortable knowing this. It's just sad that they usually aren't enamoured enough to carry the 3 inch plus ones and always end up carrying the cute-looking 2 inch ones. But something is always better than nothing.
Here's to spydie for making a great product, and for being the brand that I buy the most.
