Although she finds the idea of me spending over $100 on knives very amusing, I was at the mall with my girlfriend when she decided she was going to get a "jack-knife" (I've always hated that term) like mine (I've been carrying a Victorinox Solider) and so I was more than happy to point her to the Wenger standard issue. She wouldn't let me pay for all or any of it, so she gave the cashier her $20 bill and he said "Do you have any ID?". Since neither one of us are 18, the answer was no, but surprisingly -and much to my relief - he said "Usually we card for these, but this one is pretty small" and we went on our way. I got her to promise not to try to sharpen it with the crock stick at her house and to let me do it on my sharpmaker when it needs it. The Victorinox model wasn't there, but barring the bail they're the same knife. I was disappointed with the bail, it seems like a very poor design. I can see her closing the blade on it, and it's also very gritty when it swivels from some rough edges on either the bail or rivet. Other than that it's great, and my now-year-old Soldier had a much more muffled closing click than her fresh one, which was humbling.
She spends a lot of time with her horse so she was quite excited to see the awl. Maybe she can be saved!
By the way, we found it at Sports Authority, and I can't say their selection is too shabby. Mostly Buck, Gerber, and Wenger, (much like Wally World), but it's better than nothing, and the price was right. Plus, the over 18 discretion on the clerk's part earned them a few points with me.
Edit: The other day we were looking at some of her childhood pictures when we found one of her at girl scout knife camp, and she showed me how they made them close their knives- very slowly so there was no click. No wonder that didn't spark her interest- they robbed the poor kids of hearing those nice little knife-noises!
