Girlfriend got her first knife!

Although she finds the idea of me spending over $100 on knives very amusing, I was at the mall with my girlfriend when she decided she was going to get a "jack-knife" (I've always hated that term) like mine (I've been carrying a Victorinox Solider) and so I was more than happy to point her to the Wenger standard issue. She wouldn't let me pay for all or any of it, so she gave the cashier her $20 bill and he said "Do you have any ID?". Since neither one of us are 18, the answer was no, but surprisingly -and much to my relief - he said "Usually we card for these, but this one is pretty small" and we went on our way. I got her to promise not to try to sharpen it with the crock stick at her house and to let me do it on my sharpmaker when it needs it. The Victorinox model wasn't there, but barring the bail they're the same knife. I was disappointed with the bail, it seems like a very poor design. I can see her closing the blade on it, and it's also very gritty when it swivels from some rough edges on either the bail or rivet. Other than that it's great, and my now-year-old Soldier had a much more muffled closing click than her fresh one, which was humbling. :( ;) She spends a lot of time with her horse so she was quite excited to see the awl. Maybe she can be saved! :D By the way, we found it at Sports Authority, and I can't say their selection is too shabby. Mostly Buck, Gerber, and Wenger, (much like Wally World), but it's better than nothing, and the price was right. Plus, the over 18 discretion on the clerk's part earned them a few points with me.

Edit: The other day we were looking at some of her childhood pictures when we found one of her at girl scout knife camp, and she showed me how they made them close their knives- very slowly so there was no click. No wonder that didn't spark her interest- they robbed the poor kids of hearing those nice little knife-noises!

Hey im on the good news with the knife girlfriend front as well. The GF does office work and i guess they make her throw out the printer paper and other such boxes, well she got a couple paper cuts from the boxes. Today she took my benchmade 886 blue star from me ( Its ok i have ka-bar dozier to hold me over till my rat trap gets here). She has used it before and kinda liked it especially the blue anodized Ti liners, its a nice slim light weight low riding knife and now she found a use for it. I just hope she ends up liking it and wants to keep it.

nice story, NR. it's always nice to hear when someone's girl has taken an interest in knives. i also liked the part about the clerk selling to you two: i wouldn't want to think they made a habit of it, but they can trust you. ;)

i have also bought a couple knives from Sports Authority. their selection's pretty lame, but they sometimes have some good ones, and the prices on most are actually not that bad -- a few were on clearance last time i was there, including some Kershaws.

NR, sounds like you have a keeper there! First she only finds it amusing, not nuts, that you can spend over a $100 on one knife (wait till you start looking at a Sebenza) and second she bought one for herself. Hopefully next time she'll be looking at a Spyderco or a Benchmade, and then you will be all set.

So I saw her today and she said "I'm in love with my knife!". She told me she spent 15 minutes this morning cutting cupons and paper for fun (I explained that paper products kill the edge) and slicing carrots for her horse (at which point I encouraged her to wipe the blade off) and cutting the twine for the hay (at which point I just told her to be careful). :D I gave her the sharper-the-safer talk. But even if she kills the edge and gets a patina, I'd rather she enjoys the knife. A $20 SAK is expendable ;)

Patina on a SAK? That's pretty rare.

Not with you anymore? ;)

Nope, I got replaced! :D

And I'm sure the SAK won't really rust, maybe get a few tiny watermarks eventually at the most, but I have to get her into good habits in case she picks up the interest any more :)

Cool is right! This is the most "FEEL GOOD" thread I've read in a long time! :D

There is hope for the world.
