While I was in the U.S. I picked up a copy of 'The Secrets of Giron Arnis Escrima' by Antonio E. Somera. It's published by Tuttle and is 134 pgs. w/many bw photos.

The most interesting part of the book for me was the chapter detailing Grandmaster Giron's experiences in WW II, as well as his personal philosophy on Escrima. Great stuff.

The rest of the book gives a quick break down of the 20 styles that make up Giron Arnis Escrima, some basic warm ups, the twelve strikes that make up Estillo de Fondo, basic blocks and defences, and short sections on stick disarms and Cadena de Mano. There's also a forward by Guro Dan Inosanto and a short glossery of filipino m.a. terms.

Overall, I thought it was a great (if somewhat short) read, and is a good intro to the arts of the Bahala Na Martial Arts Association. The b/w photos were easy to follow, and the descriptions helpful. Personally, I thought it was a great effort by Antonio Somera (a master in Giron Arnis Escrima) and well worth looking at.

Anyone else who's read the book and has other opinions, please feel free...

Peace,

Jay

Kelvin (K. Williams) - thanks for the tip! Actually I've been planning on getting a copy of 'Filipino Martial Culture' for awhile now...I've heard some mixed reviews about it...sounds intriguing.

Btw, has anyone read Rey Galang's book 'Complete Siniwali' published by Tuttle?

Peace,

Jay

Soulsurfer,

You're welcome. Is Master Galang's book available? I've had a copy on backorder with Amazon.com for over a month now.

I have had it about two-three weeks.. Probably one of the most complete books on the use of Sinawali out there..Well covered and explained...
I wish it had been done in a larger format..
Congrats to the authors on a well done project!!!
I love the expanding library of Filipino martial arts books and videos....

Hi Bram! You've read the book already? Sounds like an excellent read. I'm still awaiting my copy (it's still on order here) so I guess I've got to be a little more patient.
