Still in my "Buy all the stones" phase. I just got a Gritomatic 120 and decided to see how close I could get my Tops Tanimboca to a zero-degree scandi-grind. After doing 100 strokes on both sides, I had a nice smooth look and was very impressed. Then switched to 100 strokes on my Shapton Glass 220 and noticed some fairly deep scratches. The scratches were inconsistently deep and after 50 more strokes I could see the scratches would keep popping up until I tried a new stone. I switched to the other side and did 100 strokes with my Naniwa 120/220 (the 220 side) and saw a smooth consistent surface. Next, I did 100 strokes on both sides on a Sharp Pebble 8000 to make the scratches more visible and ensure it wasn't a trick of the light I was seeing.
It appears both the Gritomatic 120 and Naniwa 220 silicon carbide stones are more consistent than the Shapton Glass 220. Anyone else notice this, or want to tell me how I'm doing it wrong? All stones were used with water only.
