Hello everyone.

As many of you may know, this day in 2005 was particularly tragic for our great Country. I simply do not have the words to express the pain felt throughout our community, the friends and most importantly the families of those touched by this event. There is not a day that goes by that we do not remember our friends and Team mates lost on this operation.

I do not speak of work often; it's just not my style. Most of us in Naval Special Warfare are here out of deep patriotism and Love for our country. We do what we do not for recognition, but for the quiet sense of satisfaction that comes when we are allowed to make a difference for our Country. We are a tight community, and do not react to losses well. So, on this day, it is important that we remember our friends and honor them in our own way. I mourn their loss, but I do not use that pain as a crutch. Instead it is a catalyst that drives me to try harder, train harder, Love my family more and most importantly to view each day as the gift that it truly is.

Some of you may have read the book titled "The Lone Survivor". It written by my good friend Marcus Luttrell. Marcus is a giant 6"4' (Or taller, depending on the moment) Texan, an absolute badass, but also the kindest and most sincere person you could ever hope to call friend. The book is written just like Marcus is sitting next to you at the campfire recalling his life and the events of that operation. It can be a tough read at times, because as I said Marcus is a Texas Giant and they have their own way of telling a story, but when it comes to the actual tale of the operation, I challenge you to try and put the book down.

I will be giving away a copy of this Book and also a PBS DVD Documentary Box set titled "The War". It covers the WWII Period of 1941 to 1945 and should be excellent to watch with any young man or woman especially during these times of unsettling similarities.

Even though the giveaway is in remembrance of a very serious event, I'd like to make the contest fun. Here are the rules.

Level One entry: Just Post "Count me in", and accompany that with some patriotic statement (God Bless America etc...).

Level Two entry: Post a web address, photo or news article that is in memorial of those we have lost in War. It can be specific to operation Red Wings, or any other War involving our Country (Let's keep it Civil War to Present).

Level Three entry: I have sent in little trinkets on several occasions to the Busse crew (The Shop, The Company Store etc...). From time to time these have popped up in previews, ads, or just random photos here and on other family hosted forums (hint). Find as many of these as you can and post links or list them. You can build from another person’s post or combine separate entries from multiple posts (pic three from John’s post, pic one from Sallies post etc...).

Level one is worth one entry, level two is three entries and the Winner from level three will get ten entries. Level three may get its own prize depending on how fierce the competition gets.

Each person may only have one entry per level (So max of three entries unless you win level three). Post as much as you'd like, but please don't kill the sites bandwidth!

Deadline for entry is Midnight on the Fourth of July. Some time on the Fifth I will get all the entries gathered up into a hat and my Son will draw the winner.

Thanks for the contest. I already have the book and for anyone who has not read it yet, you need to. Bravery and sacrifice to the ultimate level. Started reading it and truelly could not stop. I read straight through. The men of Operation Red Wing are heroes to the highest level. My thoughts and prayers go out to the families of these men and to the entire community of heroes who put it on the line everyday to keep us free. May we never forget.

God Bless

Garth

Thanks for what you do. Count me in.

While this site involves peacetime rather than war, perhaps it rates an exception as it has a special meaning to me. Lt. Kevin Wooten was my old Plt Cmdr, L/Cpl Ismael Gomez was a friend and was in my squad at one time and L/Cpl Sam Pesuti was a friend.

CH-53 crash, Pohang, Korea

Every time I hear this song I get a lump in my throat.

If tomorrow all the things were gone,
I’d worked for all my life.
And I had to start again,
with just my children and my wife.

I’d thank my lucky stars,
to be livin here today.
‘ Cause the flag still stands for freedom,
and they can’t take that away.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

From the lakes of Minnesota,
to the hills of Tennessee.
Across the plains of Texas,
From sea to shining sea.

From Detroit down to Houston,
and New York to L.A.
Well there's pride in every American heart,
and its time we stand and say.

That I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

And I’m proud to be an American,
where at least I know I’m free.
And I wont forget the men who died,
who gave that right to me.

And I gladly stand up,
next to you and defend her still today.
‘ Cause there ain’t no doubt I love this land,
God bless the USA.

Edited to add: I remembered this article after I posted. It's pretty moving. Taking Chance Home

"Of every 100 men in battle, 10 should not even be here. 80 are nothing more than targets. 9 of them are fighters, we are lucky to have them, they the battle make. Ah, but The One. One of them is a warrior..... And he will bring the others back."

Here is a news article about one of the Fire Cadets from my Dept, he is also the Son of a friend of mine. This heroic Young man lost his life fighting for the United States of America.

It's a terrible and glorious thing that America has such men who will sacrifice their lives for us.

May the flame that burn bright in each and every one of you never diminish and never die.

Thank you for all that you do that will never be rewarded enough, never.

Count me in, I think I may have to just go buy the book regardless of the contest...

GOD BLESS AMERICA!

My favorite scripture passage has always been John 15:13 (I'm not going to quote it, get those bibles out and look it up if you don't know it :D), and those who sacrifice all for their brothers and country live it.

Very cool brother, count me in and thanks to you and all who serve silently. Did you ever run into my friend?

You know, as much garbage as is available on the internet, it is a bit of a comfort to know that a tool often used for wickedness can also yield such wonderful tribute such as these. They are not all chest beating, some let you have a little insight in the the people and the lives they led. May God hold these brave men and all who have died with honor closely to himself.

The janitor is much more appreciative of full bottles of booze, just noting that for the new guys. :D Very Nice ST-Ripper by the way.

I don't know if this has any goodies you sent Jerry, but I like this pic anyway. The plaque with the sharks teeth looks to have a medallion bearing the trident on it, but I could be wrong.

There's that Iraqi swag again. :D

More to come as I find them.

Thanks for all the great posts so far. I have also received a few emails and PM's with some amazing stories. That is what the spirit of this give away is all about, honoring our friends through their memories and celebrating their lives.

I can't believe no one else has dug up a photo from some of my items that have been included in Busse Family ads. I can think of four others easily, maybe more.

I have another contest in mind for next month, but I have to get with the Admins about the rules, as it involves a charity...

So come on guys, "BRING IT"!

Btw- Busse employees etc. are totally eligible for the contest. There are enough degrees of separation that it is still a fair game.
