I'm not one to try and interpet the law, I've read and read, and still dont know.

Can I carry a balisong in the state of michigan?

Thanks guys, I'm looking for a yes or a no here:D

750.227. (1) A person shall not carry a dagger, dirk,
stiletto, a double-edged nonfolding stabbing instrument of
any length, or any dangerous weapon, except a hunting
knife adapted and carried as such, concealed on or about
his or her person, or whether concealed or otherwise in
any vehicle... except in his or her dwelling house [or]
place of business... (3) A person who violates this
section is guilty of a felony...

The "other dangerous weapon, except a hunting knife" concerns me. I do not like laws that are open to so much interpretation. I could see where someone could construe a balisong to be a dangerous weapon. My first instinct is no. Let me do some more checking.

Mateen, there is nothing in Michigan law that specifically prohibits balisongs, however, if its over 3 inches, it should be carried in a sheath or otherwise unconcealed. If you're questioned by the cops about it, its a tool, and you're carrying it because you have a right to. I know its hard to believe, but there are a few cops out there that may tell you that its illegal, and offer to help you out by confiscating the knife and sending you on your way. If you're in the Lansing area, check with the Knife Trader on Michigan Ave. near US27. They seem to be fairly well informed on the carry laws.

If I were a sheeple or a hellbent cop and has never see one or don't care, a balisong would big and scary enough for me to consider it a "dangerous weapon".
Even if it's legal, some cops will egg you on (it's usally the younger ones) until you screw up and then they'll make it an assult on an officer with a deadly weapon.

Mateen,
Knife Trader sells butterfly knives. I agree with the post that as long as the blade is not double edged and 3" you are fine, and it can be over 3" as long as it is not concealed. I think the determining factor for almost all situations though is (unfair as this may be) appearance, with your demeanor coming in a close second. If you look respectable and act decent you will probably be fine. I also second always referring to it as a tool.
