Simply put, what's up with spydiebyrds? Yeah I can read info blurbs on sites but I don't know anything outside of that.

My experience is only with Cara Cara as I am fan of Endura size. They are value for money. Good steel, good fit and finish. 8Cr is a very serviceable steel. I can actually dry shave with my Cara Cara. The handle shape (ignore it's boxy) is better than Endura 4.

However, the Cara Cara maker is over zealous with thread locker. I have 4 Cara Cara 2 passes my hand and all have this issue even on the clip screws. Spyderco CS helps by sending replacement screws for those I had to destroy due to the thread locker.

So if one is not going to move the clip or disassemble the knife, they lock up solid, sometimes more lockbar engagement than Endura, blade is centered and work great!

The Raven is by a different maker, so YMMV.

Two words: not good.

I've had a bunch of different ones from Bryd line, the fit and finish as well as the material used are subpar to other cheaper knives from Chinese manufacturers such as Ganzo, Sanrenmu, Enlan

Excellent knives for the money. I have several and keep them in vehicles and have gifted others. Overall F&F is very, very good and, like pretty much all Spydercos, designs are optimized for performance.

Insane value. Yes, they're Chinese but the ones that I've handled had excellent fit and finish.

i have a handful from over the years. not bad. not great, but they cut and work. if one is expecting supreme fit and finish and early lock up on the liner lock versions and zero blade play on the lockback versions...you will be disappointed.

in other words as working tools they are a good value. for collectibles to gawk over not so much.......

not sure who makes them for spyderco, maybe srm? but i feel they are equal to a bit better than most ganzos and enlans and srms. fit and finish wise.

I have a Byrd Hawkbill that I use for cutting up recycling and for yard work. I'm not sure if I could find a better tool for the job at $20. I find the edge holding on the knife is adequate and I can get it to push cut receipt paper using the sharpmaker.

What are you going to be using the knife for? Is there a specific model that you have in mind?

I think it's pretty neat to see Spyderco add BD1 to the Byrd lineup.

IMG_3930.JPG I have 2 of them...the Cara Cara 2 FRN version, no problems with that one...nice model for the $$ spent. The Meadowlark model...I had to send it back for another one...the blade wouldn't center at all. It was replaced by Spyderco and I've had no issues with the replacement. For the $$ spent I think they are good options if they fit what your needs are.

I've had a few, my experiences varied.

Robin 2 G10, Cara Cara 2 G10, Meadowlark 2 FRN, Tern, and Raven 2.

The first four I bought 5+ years ago. They all had 8cr13mov, and all were very thick behind the edge.
Ergos on the Robin 2, CC2 and Tern are outstanding, as is par for the course with Sal Glesser designs.
Ergos on the Meadowlark were bafflingly bad, for me.

The Raven two is newer. Spyderco changed the steel and the factory for these knives, and it makes a world of difference.
The new CTS-BD1 far outperforms the 8cr13mov on the older knives, and the grind is much better.
I highly recommend this knife, it's pretty much a poor man's PM2.

I've also had a chance to handle the Crow 2, and it was consistent with the improved quality of the Raven 2.
So I would suggest you look at their newer, CTS-BD1 models, and I hope they come out with more of these.

Fit and finish on all has been very good, especially considering the price.

Have a hawkbill Byrd, and used to have a Meadowlark 2 combination edge. The Meadowlark sold me on Spydies, the quality for the price was just superb. I didn't put it through any hard use just box opening at work, and it held its edge for months.

They don't sound like CCC garbage and that's what I thought they were supposed to be with spyderco entering that market to keep people from buying ganzos (or gerbers).

I've been thinking about buying a slew and passing them around as gifts (for a few years now) to guys in the family who don't even hunt. No use buying them a real knife if they just throw it in a drawer/excommunicate me because it's an assault utensil.

Assault utensil made me laugh. Consider it stolen. ;)

I'll 3rd the Bryd Hawkbill. Picked one up recently and it's awesome for $20, can't believe it took me so long. Will probably get a g10 Meadowlark or Cara-Cara too at some point. I do prefer the round hole opener to the comet one, but it's not a dealbreaker.

In my opinion, I think they'd be great for that purpose.
