Recently discovered Busse and posted a thread asking about Busse, Scrapyard, Swamprat and what the differences were. Thanks to all who posted help. Im definitely in a different world now. Only been addicted for about a year (really pissing off my wife) and I dont know how it happened. Started with a Spyderco and twenty knives later Im here. Feels like home. Just wish I hadnt spent enough on my last Strider knives to have bought an ASH and a BM. Should be saving for kitchen remodel but one look at both those suckers and I gotta have at least one. NOW. So here are my questions.
1. What is double cut?
2. Do I want Magnum grips. I have medium hands but want good grip.
3. Hard to evaluate the ASHs. I want to use this knife especially since its my first Busse. So I started with the Combat double cut with black and white G10. Turns out to be almost same price as a ASHLE. I like the looks of the LE and seems from reading that these are more likely to increase in value. I also like the full flat grind. The combat is heavier and thicker, will that make a difference? Seems like all these knives are plenty tough. But the FBM test on knifetests.com was incredibly impressive and that knife is thick like the Combat. My question is would anyone really buy an LE and use it? I cant afford 2. Any opinions?
I know what you are going to say: "You're going to end up with both anyway so buy whatever?"
Look Im risking divorce already with the Striders. When this is through I couldve bought a stove, dishwasher, and refrigerator. Help.
Hell Im out of control. I dont drink but after three days on this website I see its time to start. Pass the Kool Aid.

1. "Double Cut" is Busse's version of a bead blast finish... IIRC, they bead blast each D/C blade twice (Maybe using different size 'beads'?? Not sure on that.), hence the 'double'. It's a fine, 'flat' or non-reflective finish on the bare steel.
2. Recommending Magnum or regular grips for another person is dicey because every one's hand size & preference varies, so I'll just say that I have medium palms and fairly long fingers and all I ordered was Mags on the ones I bought. Very comfortable.
3. This is my LE user. It's not really broken in yet. :D ...Yes, I will probably use one of my Combat Grade SH-1's too, but I want a user ASH-1that's not so thick & heavy, and I prefer satin finished knives.

I hope this helps ya! :)

If you like the ASH-1, I would go for a CG with standard micarta grips and a coated blade. I like the desert olive (sage) coating and it goes well with black or tan micarta. It's the cheapest possible ASH-1.

Another alternative is the NW SAR 5 which is a smaller knife but costs less than $200 even if you get fancy G-10 grips.

It's going to be available in a 'ganzaa Friday night so if you like it, study up on 'ganzaas so that you aren't left out.

Both of those choices are knives that I wouldn't hesitate to use and they are a good value also.

The SAR 5 is not a good value...

it is an AWESOME value, never to be seen again. Buy one or you will have regrets!

Of the two ASH's you are describing I would go with the LE for sure.
Like you said it's not much higher than the DC one you're thinking about.

The LE is much lighter, much better looking and plenty thick enough.

IMO, the premire user so far in the ASH line is the LE. The combination of thinner blade and magnum handles is perfect. When compared to the CG (blade too thick) and the SE's (thin grips on thin blade), the LE is the clear winner.

What he said.

I'll admit that the HOG CG ASH1 changed my mind about mag grips on a thick blade. I love the feel of that thing in hand. However, I agree with Mike that, in a blade this size, the thinner blade of the LE is a more utilitarian thickness. You won't go wrong with the LE.
