So ive been browsing around for a new knife, ive found something that has caught my eye, an Emerson A100. Opinions? How do they compare in general to lets say a benchmade? Any problems youve heard about? First hand expierence is appreatiated.
Thanks.

as far as F&F and materials EKI makes good stuff, as good as BM imho, though i dont own an A100 i do have ~ a dozen EKI's and a couple of custom emersons & all have been great knives.

the only con ya ever hear about EKI is:

*weak liner locks - EKI has been a lot better in this regard since ~ '02 or so and they dont seem to have the probs they had (or some say they had) for a few yrs, the EKI liner locks are as good as anyones, but like any LL they can wear and go outta adjustment especially with a lotta inertia opeing or waving, if ya have probs ya can send it back to EKI & they will fix it no problem, usually for the price of return shipping. as far as myself i have had to send my SOCFK in for adjustment one time since '01, only other emerson i have had lock issues with was a BM 975 (an emerson design).

*the grind - all EKIs are ground a little different, none are a std "V" grind (like say a spyderco delica PE) & they require a little different technique for sharpening, but they cut just fine and once ya get used to it sharpening is no biggie either, if ya can sharpen a std "V" ya can sharpen an EKI. also due to the grind some say they arent the best utility knives (EKI's are designed 1st & foremost for self defense FWIW) but imho they will work just fine for utility, maybe not the best whittling knife lol, but other than that or really fine work they work just fine.

i like the A100 and most folks i have seen post about them also like them, i do have a I&I tanto which has about the same handle, & i like it a lot, if ya like the A100 imho there are no big cons to conmsider go ahead and get one, i imagine ya will love it.

I'll add one more issue to SIFU1A's breakdown, which was really good. The finish that Emerson refers to as "satin," on the production knives (excluding the Japanese made, "Hard Wear" knives), does not fit my definition (or that of anyone else I've talked to) as a true, satin finish. Emerson even says it's a "bead blasted finish," in the glossary, under his definition of "satin finish." http://emersonknives.com/EK_Glossary.html

Other than that, and my personal feeling that the terms Emerson gives their grinds are rather confusing, I think Emerson makes great knives!

Regards,

agree with ya on the terms they use about the grinds, they confuse a lot of folks, if i had a nickle for everone who bought a commander expecting a std "v" grind i could buy a commander lol, same with the finish issue the EKI "satin" is not to me a satin finish, now my custom emersons they have satin finishes, i also wish EKI would offer that, AFAIK the only production with a true satin finish is the ECA P-Tac and its a "semi" production not a real production.

Superbly made knives. Buy with confidence. Also take a look at their new Horseman, if you prefer smaller folders.
