I just bought an MSR Pocket Rocket and I do have a local source for the MSR fuel. The question is, does it have to be MSR fuel or will similar brands work? I have read a little bit online, but I am getting mixed reviews. Is it ok to use fuel from Coleman or other companies?

Thanks,
maurice

For the most part, the other cans will work. since each company has a bit of a different blend, you will get a bit different performance from the stove. I've heard that some brands don't quite follow the standard, so be sure you test new cans before a trip. But you should be fine with most brands. I've also heard that some stove-can combos require much more torque than others, so that is something to keep in mind if you get a valve that doesn't activate.

I interchange Jetboil and MSR brands just fine. I believe the Coleman canisters work okay too.
If you're of an ecological mind, this little tool might be worth looking at: http://shop.jetboil.com/index.php/crunchit.html
The only thing I don't like about canister stoves is tossing the canisters in the trash.

I have a Jetboil Flash and a Snow Peak Gigapower stove. I've used Jetboil, Snow Peak, and MSR fuels on on both and never really noticed any difference.

Thanks for the info, guys. I've got an Academy, Wal Mart, and Cabelas, plus a couple of smaller stores specializing in outdoor gear in the area. I will get several different kinds and see what works best. I am looking forward to getting the little guy.

Didnt want to start another thread. Can anyone recommend a pot that will store a cannister of gas inside it, along with the stove? Cheap is good, but light is more important. Thanks again for the info, guys.

depending on the stove size, snow peak do a mug that will store a small can of gas, a small stove and hold it all in with their spork

The GSI soloist got good reviews and I've been known to throw mine into the luggage with some mac and cheese to make in the hotel room when I don't feel like going out.

The Optimus Crux and Crux lite along with a fuel canister fit their pots. The Solo mess kit fits a 4oz canister, the Weekend fits the 8oz canisters.
