I rarely venture out of "Shop Talk" or "Custom & Handmade Knives" but I thought I might be able to get a better feel for what users prefer by posting this in General Discussion. I am working on a profile for a EDC. Below are four different blade shapes. 2-4 are full flat grinds; number one is obviously not. Pin and bolster placement are on there to give an idea but I lay that out on the knives as I make them to ensure correct location. All knives are 7-1/8" long and all blades are 3-1/8" tip to bolster. If you were going to carry one as an EDC, which would it be and why? Thanks for the input guys!

Number 3, although I also like number 2, but if were buying it would be number 3.

3 is the one.

I like the belly on 2 and 3, but the curvature of the drop point makes the overall design "flow" better.

I like 1, 2, & 4. If all were available and I were buying one, it would absolutely be #2. I would save up and then probably buy the tanto too. :D

I like 4 the best. For everyday tasks ( mine does Not include skinning) I think a wharncliffe-ish style blade is the most useable. 4 is closest to that.

I would prefer number 3. Then after that as my second choice i would get number 2. If i was forced with no option of my prefered styles i would get number 4. Reason being i a drop point knife i like the way it looks and the general utility of the style.

All right guys, thanks! I have 3 and 4 in the heat treat oven right now. I will do 1 and 2 in a couple weeks. I like them all for different reasons but I think three will be my new EDC offering.

I prefer #4, mainly for one reason- I frequently seem to need a keen point in my EDC knives and #4 has the keenest point.

If it's blacked out with black micarta, as if for a PDW, I'd say #1. Tanto grind is strong for piercing and decent for slashing. #2 is nice, it would make a decent "hunter" style. #3 could also go the "hunter' route, and is probably the one I'd prefer for my boss to see me with at work. Drop points aren't considered to be "as threatening". I'd say the EDC should be #3. #4 is intriguing, I own one with this grind, the point is nice, and it's a rare grind too, be good for a small run I'm sure.

I'm digging number 4. I tend to prefer a knife with a less pronounced belly on it, and so I picked the four. Also, the pointier tip on the 4 seems like it would be beneficial to most daily tasks such as opening packages/mail and other general puncturing tasks.
