Another noob here. I thought I share how I planted the seed of the SAK bug in my wife. (That sounds awful. Don't read into it. You know what I'm trying to say.) You can do the same. It's surprisingly simple.
First, I waited for it to be her birthday. Then I gave her a shiny new red midnight manager! She loves red things and shiny things. I put it on her keychain and explained how it has a cool led light and a pen and even a nail file! She went ooh at the nail file.
Caution!!! If you get your non-knifeaholic wife or girlfriend (or both) a knife as a gift, you must spend an equal or greater amount of money on something they will truly want.
That's it.

Has anyone tried something similar to this? Am I wasting my time trying to get the misses into knives?

No, as I am not skilled enough to get either a girl friend or wife so I fail on both counts. I did get my sister to carry a sak classic on her key ring though if that counts.

The caution is 100% correct. Bought my wife a Leatherman Squirt and as a surprise and gave it too her. She then asked where is the surprise. lol She does like it tho and carry's it on a lanyard with a 4Sevens mini AA in her pocket book.

I bought my wife a purple spyderco ladybug and she likes it. I think the OP is correct though, you basically can't count this towards what you would have bought them otherwise.

Decades ago, I gave my wife a Climber for as birthday gift. I wouldn't say she got the SAK bug on that account, but was pleased with it and carries it in her purse or pocket to this day. She admires its quality and usefulness, but has no further interest in pocket knives as a hobby.
Face it, we on this forum are knifeknuts and look upon SAKs not only tools but as items to collect, fuss over and take (semi) seriously. Most regular people think of SAKs as utilitarian things, worth no more consideration than a screwdriver or fire extinguisher. This is not a bad thing. I don't mind my wife's attitude. That leaves all the more for me. :D

You guys are probably right. It's not exactly "pearls before swine" because the utility and usefullness of a SAK is undeniable, but it may very well be a lost cause. It may be a waste but I'm still going to follow up with a red alox farmer if I can find one before christmas... You know, for camping.

Mr Student762, sisters do indeed count. She fits the mould: loved one & not a dude. :)

I gave the wife a Classic for her keychain. She never put it on, and always asks for mine when she needs something like scissors or a file. I thought about getting her the nesting doll Classic, as she loves those, but she told me not to waste my money.

I tried doing that, but it sort of back fired. My wife now loves SAK's, and won't do without the classic on her keyring, and the waiter in her purse. But of my three kids, two out of the three are SAK nuts with no interest in the 'other' knives, like the tradition pocket knives. My daughter and older son are devote SAK nuts. The older boy is out traveling a lot for business, in Europe he carried a SAK or two in his checked luggage. My daughter always has a classic on her keyring and a larger SAK in purse model depending on what is one the schedule for the day.

I hate it if my wife became a knife nut .
She would realise how much money they are really worth , and how much I've spent in the last couple of years .

My wife couldn't care less until I got her an Opinel. Now she has some noteworthy items, including a Gunny, in 3V, and an $800 set of steak knives, in M390.

Warning It sounds all good and fine to get your wife into what you are into. I would say just develop a slight interest and no more than that. I am here to tell you she will become wise to what things cost like knives guns fishing gear and she will start to tell the difference from new and old. When it comes to my Hunting, Bows, knives, guns and toys I prefer to keep her blissfully unaware of the cost.

I bought my wife a pink Classic (?, the small one with a nail file) and she carries it to this day in her purse. That was over 20 years ago, and she now owns several knives that she has bought herself.

That's a true measure of success; she buys knives for herself. I guess that's my aspiration here. Excellent!

Thanks. She bought a Henckels paring knife at a yard sale for $3. She said it appeared to be well made, was sharp, and it fit her hand.
She bought an old Imperial Barlow at another yard sale, paid the guy $2 for it. It was in used but good shape, still had the walk and talk. I asked her why did she buy it, and she said it looked like a knife her father owned.
She has bought a couple other knives, but they weren't great quality. She bought them because she liked them.
She always looks for the older Green River style kitchen knives and recognizes Case, Schrade, Kershaw, and Colonial brands.

One summer back I bought pink translucent classic sd Victorinox from Berlin for my girlfriend. I got it because I thought the small size would be easy enough to take with her. She had it now with her on her trip to Belgium and said she appreciated having it.
Now, women having their purses where ever they are going should have no problem having bigger, regular sized SAK with them but I guess it's the man's thing to have the only tools with him. I do however, enjoy causing the roll eyes moments with my gear and gadget trolling (aka prepping). :D

My wife had never carried a knife until I bought her a minichamp with the pink edelweiss scales. She keeps it on her keychain. I know she has used it a few times. I wasn't sure how much she liked it until she thought she lost it. She was actually upset and wanted another one. Luckily she found it the next day.
