Giveaway Rules?

I'm still a relatively new member here at BFC, but 1000 posts is rapidly approaching. It seems to be customary to do a giveaway at 1000 posts and I would like to continue the tradition, but don't know if there are any rules or guidelines I should be aware of beforehand.

So, what do I need to know?

Thanks

It's up to you what you want the rules to be.

You can make it open to anyone, paying members only, people with a 100 posts or more, regulars of your favorite subforum only etc..............

Just make sure and let me know where to send the bribe to in good time. ;)

i dont think there are any rules specific to giveaways.

ive done a few, i would recommend:

1. have all the rules in mind before you post the thread, then be sure to put all your rules in the first post. set a beginning and end date/time, decide who is eligible, etc.

2. keep it out of general, it will be tough to keep track of everything.

3. most people like the "pick a number" approach. its pretty simple, and you can use a random number generator to pick a winner. ive done a giveaway where members submitted photos, and it went pretty well.

4. have fun with it!

Really good question. I'm coming up on 1000 myself. I've been the recipient of a few giveaways myself and would like to give something back.

One thing to consider is international shipping, do you want to or not. I did mine to Canada and US, but I told my friends to the north, if they win, they are gonna help me finger out the details, but I would pay shipping, otherwise it would not be a GIVEAWAY. Hee hee. Keep that in mind. You also need to give away your best, most expensive knife, otherwise, the curse of the steel monkey will be upon you, and you don' want that.

You should give away a knife you know others WILL like but you don't have much use for, that's the best knife karma!

It's your knife, we're not going to put restrictions on it other than "don't raffle it off" or other money raising thing. That said, if you limit it to people with paid memberships, I won't object very strenuously.

I appreciate everyone's comments. I did a search and read a lot of old giveaway threads. I feel fairly confident in proceeding except for one reservation.

I noticed in the old threads I read that very few put any minimum age on entry and I'd like the younger members to be able to participate in my giveaway as well, but given the many and varied laws across the country and around the world and the litigious nature of our society has this been an issue with anyone else and if so how did you deal with it?

you could have there parent or guardian send proof of their ID. that way you could send it to the parent. and then the parent could give it to the child.

Proof of parental consent could get complicated. I would add the same sort of blurb I add to all my sale threads: "You must be 18 or older to win, and the knife must be legal to own in your area." If the kid wants to win badly enough, he/she could get a parent to register and enter.

i see your point. like if the winner was in england and you were giving away a folding locking knife. i guess my idea only works for America.

That's not your problem. If the many and various governments all over the world want all their many and various whims studied, interpreted, applied, adjudged, appealed, & enforced, they can hire people to do those things -- and in fact they have. Unless one of them hires you, though, it's not your job.

I'm glad I read this. Makes me think things a little differently while preparing for my 5000 post giveaway.

Put a closing date (calendar date, not 'Wednesday') in your initial post.

I didn't, and people were still entering after I had already drawn the winner and shipped the knives.

Good advice offered, thanks. Feel free to add more suggestions, still have a little while before I get to 1000.:)
