Giving a knife to a co-worker?

Every summer I get a new helper at work. Most of the time like this year it is someone just out of high school. They are there to work the summer until they leave for college in the fall.

My helper this year is alway's asking me for my knife.
He has a box cutter and a $5 multi-tool that can't cut anything.

The box cutter works ok for him to cut open boxs, but you just can't do everything with a box cutter that you can with a good knife.

I'm thinking about the next time he ask for a knife to have a good one ready to hand him and tell him to keep it.

Do you think this would be a good idea or a waste of my time and money?

Has anyone else given a good knife to a co-worker and told them to keep it?

The only doubts I have about doing this is that he would loose it and still be asking me for a knife.

Of couse it could go the other way too and he could end up keeping it forever and become a knife knut :)

What do you think I should do?

Thanks,

I really doubt that he would have the guts to ask you for a knife after you giving him one. Don't give him something too expensive, but give him a "real" knife, (better the chances of another knife knut in our ranks.;))

I wish my old bosses were as generous as you. A Spyderco Delica would be a good choice.

A few months ago I gave one of my work-study student workers a SS PE Spyderco Delica, and he was very pleased with this gift. He still has it and has taken good care of it. It is still his only knife.

I 2nd the PE SS delica. It's a perfect small utility knife, and the stainless steel handles have a better chance of sparking his interests further.

All (well ok, most) of the non knife co-workers that have seen my SS.S.Delica have expressed positive interest in it.

(Plus the blade is real easy to sharpen.)

Not too long ago one of my truck drivers asked me to sharpen his knife for him, I said sure and he handed me this Made in B.F.E. P.O.S. that wasn't worth the time on the stone. I gave him back a Spyderco Clip-It that I had laying around that I didn't use much. I told him that it was amazing what a sharp edge and some spit and polish could do to a knife.

But he's a good guy and has worked for me for a few years now, so I figure he was worth it.

Sounds like a very generous offer and should go a long way in enlightening this person's appreciation for a 'true' knife! Good for you!!:D

Recently I attended a luncheon; there was a gal there trying to open some thick plastic wrapping with her teeth. I heard her say she should really get herself a pocket knife. I though the same thing! (save those teeth for food!). I got to thinking about buying one for her, and then sending it to her in the mail. Those reflections gave me pleasure so I decided to act. I bought her a SPYDERCO CRICKET ( I thought that would be a good choice for tearing open plastic and such ). I mailed it off to her and received a nice thank you note back. I felt good! Now for all I know that little knife could be sitting in a drawer somewhere unused....or maybe she gave it to her nephew..if she even has one.....I dont know ? However I do know that when I went out and shopped for the knife and then sent it out in the mail I was enjoying myself. I sure was hoping she would be as excited about that knife as I was, but I began to realize I don't have any control over her thoughts or behavior. I decided this time that I was going to let the experience be my reward. I don't always get IT, but this time I did.....I think ????

I had the same idea a while back ! I hate seeing all the guys at work using them cheapo knives ! I did give 2 gurls a case and the other a kissing crain . They liked them , I think the one still has hers . It made me happy seeing her use it after i gave it to her .

I'd give him a SS Delica, a Buck 110, or a Victorinox Pioneer model. Something that would hold up to heavy work.

I have frequently given them out. The most frequent knife I have given has been a SAK Soldier.

I think it is a good idea.

The act of giving a knife away no strings attached is a wonderful feeling, giving one to a stranger, or mere acquaintance is even better, you can feel good about youself, and have nice images of those same people skipping through the fields fresh cut shafts of wheat clenched tween their teeth.

This is a lot better than the reality, that the close friend, who knows how you feel about knives, used the $80 Spyderco you gave him,(cause he really liked it) for a #2 Phillips Head Screwdriver.

The excitement and anticipation that I might win one of the many Giveaways on this forum sponsered by the many generous posters, has always put a smile on my face, and enormous response lends creedance to the belief it is better to receive than to give.( I can testify to the fact that a huge sense of satisfaction is achieved when your giving instead of receiving)

I recieved a gift knife in the mail for christmas, and turn around and gave one of mine away. Got another gift end of january, and haven't caught finances up until now to be able to give another one away.

Gifts in the knife community are sure to be treasured, though attempts to bring new ones in, by letting them taste quality, is a good thing too.

I've given away far more knives than I own. My sister in law gave my wife a Buck knock-off for me to sharpen up. It was a Pakistani POS, I sharpened and cleaned it up as best I could, but I still bought her a Buck 112 as a replacement.

One of the guys at work took an interest in my EDC's so I brought in a few from my collection to show him the different styles. I had fun showing him and giving him some background on each knife, but I didn't mention price on any one of them. I asked him which one he would feel the most comfortable carrying? He looked the knives over for a while (there were about 20, from production to customs) he then selected a Kershaw Chive. I told him it was his. He was thrilled. If he had selected my Carson or Spydie/Horn C27 he would have been SOL. ;)

For Christmas my boss Candis gave me Knives 2003. I gave her a gold business card case, but I gave her husband and the rest of my bosses Chives. I think I've given away about a dozen Chives.

Knives are great gifts. I've been given a bunch from the folks here on BFC.

I think it's a great idea. I would give him either a SS PE Delica or a V-nox Soldier. The lockback might be safer if he has never been around knives but the tools on the Soldier might help him use blade only for cutting. If you want a smaller knife but good quality eknifworks has Spyderco Navigator plain edge models for $20.Link to eKnifeworks -Smoky Mountain Knife Works I tried to link directly to the knife but it won't let me. Just search for Navigator or go the the brands.
