Giving neckers a second chance

I've owned a few neck knives over the years and I just couldn't get used to carrying them. I was constantly aware that it was there and it swung around as I walked. As a result I carried them less and less and eventually stopped carrying them all together.

Recently I've found some neck knife designs that I really like but I'm still on the fence about getting them. Are there more comfortable ways of carrying a neck knife?

I have a couple dozen neckers, went through a phase of neck knife aquisition disorder.

I suggest something as light as possible so you notice it less, and a thin leather or paracord lanyard/necklace for comfort.

The old "you'll get strangled to death if it gets caught" argument doesn't wash with me, never heard of a single case of someone getting choked to death on their neck knife lanyard.

I'm rarely without a necker. There are situations where they are invaluable, such as sitting down or strapped into a harness, when surfing or when naked...

A few good cheap and light suggestions:

For something bigger my favorite is the Fallkniven WM1 in 3G steel, king of the neckers :)

I love neckers. If you get a light, skeletonized model, you shouldn't notice too much swing. Neckers with heavier handles tend to swing more.

Also, one tip I can give is to keep the neck lanyard just loose enough to fit around your head, but no looser. The tighter it is, the less it moves. If the lanyard is too loose, it will swing all over like a pendulum.

I like freeing up space in my pockets, and the neck knife is the best way to do that. Also, in environments where its appropriate to where it outside of your clothing, such as when hiking or hunting, it is hands down the fastest way to have a knife at the ready. Otherwise, you can slip it in your shirt, keep it concealed, and just pull the lanyard up whenever you want to deploy it.

Murray Carter is one of the foremost authorities on neck knives. Here are some of his thoughts on it.

Yes. Clipped to your belt.

lol...not exactly what I had in mind but thanks for that anyway :p

Thanks for your input and the suggestions! I'll check those out when I get the chance.

I've seen Murray's videos and they're one of the reasons I've been intrigued with neck knives.
I agree that with folders clipped to the pocket, the pants to get quite crowded. Right now I have my main blade, a Vic Cadet, a flashlight as well as my cell phone all on my right front pocket! So freeing that clutter up would be a big relief for me :p

Perfect for when I....

... I'm not sure.... :p

Lol yep I thought that sounded weird! Sometimes walking around the house on a hot day though, or in a shower on a camp etc. you just want a knife with you. :)

lol...well I never leave my room without a knife so I don't see why I shouldn't have one in the shower :D

I love neck carry. It is by far my preferred method of fixed blade carry. Not all of my pants, running shorts, ski pants, etc have belt loops.

I rotate between 2 Murray Carters and a Swamp Rat Swamp Warden. I have a Bark River Mini Northstar that I occasionally use, an inexpensive ECOS Knives "box cutter" that is a beater knife mostly used for shipping, and a beautiful Tom Krein Ultimate Caper that is essentially a safe queen.

As noted above, IME light weight and short neck loop are key to carrying comfort. For me, the difference between all-day comfy carry and get-this-brick-off-my-neck can literally be about .5oz.

Often times I just keep my Carter neck knife in my back pocket. Even though it is a fixed blade and has a larger presence than a folding knife, I hardly ever notice it is there. I would get a nice neck knife with some wooden handles that are light.

What profile and size are you looking for?

My wife is a runner & wanted a neck knife to carry JIC of an animal attack or a people attack. LOL I got her a Becker Necker. Used the supplied cord for the around the neck part, but i am sure it will bounce. I plan to go to a craft store & get some elastic & a couple of hooks, so after it is over her neck, she can just use the elastic strap to keep the sheath from bouncing. It will hook into the holes already in the sheath. Easy peasy.

Becker Necker carried horizontally just to the left of my belt buckle - you'll never know it's there.

My BN sat in the safe for over three years cause there was no way I was going to wear it around my neck. I'm supposed to wear a badge all day at work - I can't stand it and take it off every chance I get. Went to the horizontal belt carry and never looked back.

Good luck.

i edc a Fallkniven WM1 in 3G.

but not as a 'neck' knife. i either clip it to my belt or carry it in my camera bag.

I've always wanted to pick up a neck knife. I've been intrigued by the tiny benchmade Snody designed activator 210/211 knives but they are pricy. Would love to get something like that or an izula in the future when I have some moolah
