I was thinking about buying some 1oz silver bars, and some other assorted precious metals to give out for gifts for christmas. What does everyone think of this idea? I know they're always going up in price, and i see it as more of a keepsake to give away/investment. Of course, this would be for the adults, kids would get something different.

Been doin' that for a couple of years now...I use silver eagles and most people are wowed. They don't know the US still mints silver coins. Great responses across the board. Enjoy the giving!

sounds like a goog idea yo me. i'm gonna glue aluminum caans together and give THOSEaway instead.(them're easier to get than silver/gold/plutonium/etc.)
idiotically drooling,
i remain, VG.

That's an interesting idea. Some folks would appreciate a chunk of metal, others wouldn't.

Any of you feel free to send me a bar of damascus for Xmas anytime.

Check with The Gerbilness above. I'm sure he can mix and match differing beer and soft drink containers together in his can crusher for ya......:p

I think that is a neat idea for a Christmas present!! I would like that FWIW.

I'm a contrarian, waste of time and money IMO.

Why spend money and time to give someone little chunks of metal that are nearly valueless, unuseable in real life, and either a PIA or unable to turn into real money if they need/want to?

By cigars/alcohol/porn for the men and jewelry for the women.

Mongo, do you need my mailing address?

Judy Judy Judy... all I can think of right now is responses that would not be appropriate for Community.;) :D Wouldn't want to get KVC all ferklempt. I'd have to had shared a meal and beer or two with ya for me to be sending you sharp pointies. So, now ya gotta come to Chicago next Sept. for the Chicago Custom show.... I'll introduce ya to Danbo and Ren. (if you can survive the Gerbie... these guys are easy!)

Gold and silver bullion is a great gift since it will increase in value sooner or later. Yes it is high now but it has more upside potential then down. I got into precious metals investing six years ago. Since then gold has more then doubled and silver has qudrupled in price.:D :D :D :D

Or you could also say that the metals have held thier value and the US dollar has lost value. Selling metals is very easy, any coin dealer will buy them and there are hundreds of reputable bullion dealers on the net. I have used Kitco (kitco.com) for years with no problems.

I've got a humongous box full of wheel weights if anyone is thinking of giving lead this year!

In Christmas 1999 I did exactly that , gave a bunch of .999 Silver Eagles (or Morgans , I cant recall to be sure) away to friends and family , despite all the huff about Y2K they were fairly cheap.

You should have heard how many of them said " Oh.... a silver dollar... thanks.."
Like Seinfeld says , if the giftee mentions the name of the gift upon opening it , they cannot possibly like it , i.e. "oh... tube socks.... thanks."

:D

I wonder who still has thiers.... lol
