GL-Inet Slate AX (GL-AXT1800) Gigabit Wireless Router? Or other travel routers?

I'm looking to add a small travel router to use in hotels/motels mainly with weak Internet service. My plan is to use a desk ethernet connection and a VPN (or similar protected service) to protect my traffic. This may see limited use at remote "worksites" as well for wireless use. Is this a good option for me or, should I consider something different?

I am thinking of using this with Wireguard and would welcome comments on it versus something like the common commercial VPN services like NordVPN or ProtonVPN and similar options as well. I should note, this not an "either or" scenario but, a both scenario for a hardware and software solution to keep bad guys out of my system.

I'm not hugely concerned with things like Government surveillance but, I do want to protect myself from other hotel guests and motel personnel along with the more common sources of computer crime and surveillance. I reduced "footprint" of commercial surveillance is desired as well.

For those curious about common easy to use privacy tools, I would suggest you start here: https://www.eff.org/pages/tools
For location tracking and other issues, users should start here for general background: https://epic.org/issues/data-protection/location-tracking/

TIA,
Sid
