Glad I had my flashlight with me

This friday me, my father and my dog were driving home for Christmas from some final grocery shopping. My parents live in rural area and we were about half way home when we crashed with moose passing the road. It was about 4pm by the time this happened but during this time of the year in this latitude it is allready pitch black and seeing anything on the road is really hard (and it was also snowing). Very luckily we had slow enough speed and box van, and nobody got hurt. Pretty intense feeling to know though that you are going to crash and there’s nothing to do but to take the blow.

So, after little shakes you are on the side of the icy road on with traffic passing by wich is dangerous. Luckily our signal lights in the car worked and we had reflectors that could be placed on the road.

In this kind of situation you really get a good reminder why you should carry a flashlight with you. It brings a good amount of security when you can make yourself more visible and and able to see. Took a good 30+ minutes for the police to arrive. Long time to wait on the road.

So there’s one more answer to the classic ”why would you need flashlight when you got one in your phone?” question. Add to that the factor that phones don’t work all that good in the sub zero weather.

I'm glad everything turned out ok for you guys. I hope the van isn't too costly of a fix for you.

I 100% agree on always having a flashlight. I usually have multiple close by, whether in a bag or one in the car. You just never know when it'll come in handy or be a necessity.

Two is one and one is none.

To the phone/flashlight comment I stick to two responses.

- Why use phone battery on that?

- Yes, I can probably use a wrench to drive a nail but it’s not the right tool for the job.

Glad to know everyone is ok. Funny to see people justify their decision to not have an EDC light or even a light kept in their car and to justify ridiculing people who do carry a light by saying what's the point when you have a phone. Then it's funny to see those same people come to you when they want something cut or when the lights go out. Hard for elitists to elite when they're in the dark. They still find a way to blame their lack of preparedness on someone else though.

Glad everyone is ok. This is a good reminder of "always be prepared". Everyone should keep some basics in their vehicle. Food, water, flashlights, basic med kit, etc.

As someone who works 2nd or 3rd shift, flashlights are just as important for me to carry as a knife. I always have 2 lights on me. Olight I3L (key chain) + Nitecore EA1. I don't consider my phone a flashlight.

Not all areas have cell phone coverage especially in mountains ! That can go for radio comm also. I always have a Pelican 3"C" and a couple of Fenix 1 cell AA lights too. Once I had a warm feeling to use a flashlight to find a loose wire at -25F ! I'm happier using ordinary batteries instead of rechargebles and check them often.

Funny, folks will carry an umbrella when there's 40% chance of rain, but won't pack a flashlight when there's 100% chance of darkness. I always have a couple around.

Glad everyone is okay. Good time to make sure there's a light in all of your rigs, and that the batteries are all good to go. Put a Bic lighter in there too.

Glad all was good and that you had your flashlight with you.
I'm glad I had my flashlight yesterday on Christmas because I the faulty breaker box kept going off while I was trying to get an air mattress set up.
My 100 lumen little carry light kept getting pulled out of the pock-its on my belt.

Absolutely.... I always carry a quality light with me. In my jacket pocket, a belt sheath, pants pocket, wherever... There's plenty of places for me to include one there's no reason not to.

Right now it's either my FourSevens Quark QK2L-X (780L) or a Streamlight Protac 2L-X (500L). Hell, even if by some odd chance I forget either of those I have a Thrunite Ti3 on my car keys. With 1 AAA battery that thing can put out an impressive 120L and even has strobe if you need to signal.

A flashlight is a required accessory in a car/vehicle. Much damage? I had a older vehicle, kind of like "brad" from the Liberty Mutual TV ad for auto insurance.... had what appeared to be a very small accident and the insurance company totaled the vehicle. I was sad. But I replaced it yesterday with a brand new 2017 pickup. Talk about sticky shock!! My old one was 20 years old and I owned and used it for the last 15-16 years continuously. Good pickup. I will keep my fingers crossed that this one will be as dependable.
