Gladius: Point me in the right direction

Condor makes one that actually looks like it might be useful for more than just display. All the Condor products i've handled have been really solid (for the $). Not sure how historically accurate it is though . . . Cold steel also makes something called a "gladius machete". it's a little more tacticool and less practical looking but it might be a bit more historically accurate (at least in size). You might have better luck asking this question in the sword sub-forum. And 5 minutes of googling would have you far more knowledgable on the subject than me.

I got the Condor (the "combat machete") when I got the gladius urge.

The Condor Combat Machete is a pretty solid piece of work! I've had mine for around 5 years now.

Becker knives ROCK !!! Check em out. Also Condor, Ontario, Boker Plus series.

Hmmmm....yeah pretty darn sure Becker doesn't make a gladius! Neither does Ontario or Boker. :o

Me too. I've beaten mine like I'm mad at it with zero problem. The other night I was checking out a couple videos and reviews of the Windlass Qama (sp?- which is dirt cheap) and I figured my Condor will still be fine by me.

FYI, this was NOT a WTB... this was an "opinions on the options" thread. I wasn't asking anyone to sell me anything.

I am looking to find out who is making a sub $100 gladius. Not sure how that qualifies as a Want Ad

My mistake. Sent apology in VM and reversed warning.

I am seriously considering the Windlass Qama... does anyone have one? I'd like to hear impressions of it as an actual combat weapon.

here's a picture of the Qama

I don't have any personal experience with it, but those reports I've read say that it's quite a bargain. :)

planning on getting into some serious sword fights sometime soon? lol. it'll hold up to some yard work which is about the worst you'll be able to do with it. I really don't think this is the forum for talking about "combat swords". i'm sure there are a few knowledgable people around but i think most of us are more interested in pocket knives, utility knives and other useful tools. not so much interest in "i used to get bullied" swords.

Warning: Strong Language. :D

But in all seriousness there are a handfull of us hear that are really into swords for their historical significance and just because they're plain ol' AWESOME. :D

i don't buy a sword if i can't use it as a weapon. Knives are tools, Machetes are tools, Axes are tools, swords are weapons

If it's not usable, it decorative. I don't have any use for more decorations. I will probably never have the slightest use for a sword as a weapon, as i have a LOT of ammo for my .40, but it's still a weapon, and i want to make absolutely certain it is of sufficient quality to perform as such

And hell, you never know when you're going to need to skewer a zombie

For me it primarily is a factor that regardless of if anyone else is able to spot a piece as a wallhanger I'll still KNOW it's a wallhanger and I can't stand the idea. I want to be able to play with my toys, and I never liked the gaudy nature of display pieces or the disingenuous nature of them (mimicking a real functional item.) Rubs me the wrong way on so many levels. So if I have a sword it's going to be a functional one.

If you're looking to inflict damage and you don't plan on swinging it at someone in plate armor then there is absolutely nothing wrong with the Cold Steel Gladius Machete. You wouldn't want to to go edge to edge with something more substantial, but if you want to slash and stab then it is more than suitable for that. I definitely would not want one swung at me. It's sharp and light, but well balanced.

I personally can't stomach CS's machete line... i have a couple of their kukris, and they're too thin to be used for anything but yard work

I prefer more substantial blades.

In my experience, yard work is just about the ultimate test for a sword. if it'll stand chopping down a small tree or a mid sized shrub it'll stand just about anything else. you're not going to be getting in a any battles with knights wearing armor out of a fantasy series. and yeah, i appreciate the coolness of a sword thats not a POS and would have been pretty excited by them when i was a kid. I still have a well made hand and a half sword that was made for legitimate swordplay practice. it doesn't have an edge but it still destroyed a couple small shrubs :)
