Anyone out there ever tested the effectiveness of the umnumzaan glass breaker? I imagine it works fine, but I'm curious nonetheless if any of the folks on the forum had call to use this sometimes forgotten feature of the 'big boss'.

Yeah, I used mine on an accident I witnessed a few years back. Used it to take the passenger's side windows to gain access to the patient. Doesn't work as well as a dedicated window punch, but works far better than not having one.

Wow....the Umnumzaan saving lives! There's a knife that actually deserves a spa treatment! Thanks for sharing flipe8.

There used to be some very good Youtube vids of people giving the glass breaker a try, they had mixed results that I think we're mostly due to technique. Consensus seemed to be that it worked, but is far from ideal.
If you or anyone who reads this gives it a try I highly recommend that you were some thick gloves with a long cuff to cover your wrist as well as a thick coat. The way you swing will most likely cause you to get cut when the window breaks and there's too many veins close to the surface there to do it without taking proper precautions.

I have tried it and it does work as other have already stated. One does need to be careful not to put you hand or arm through the window when using a smaller handheld glass breaker such as that on a knife though so good technique is everything. I have also used it to puncture holes in things like cans to save damaging the point of the knife doing the same thing. I did kind of roll my eyes a bit when I first saw it on the Umnumzaan but really it is quite a handy feature to have if it can be done discretely as it is on the Umnumzaan. :)

It must strike into the top corner of the glass. So do not drop the glass in the arm.
A greeting.

It works well if you are 100% aware of the angle of the knife, otherwise most of the impact is directed toward the actual frame of the knife, the two small cut outs, one on each side. Being right handed and concerned about the blade opening and the power of hitting the glass, I backhand the knife and strike the glass with a back handed motion. It seems I make first contact with the frame . My conclusion, It works as good as any 5-6 inch pc of hard metal, but in the real event of using, would leave the user bleeding. My best use, many many, times, a punch for a screw start , or, and forgive me Chris a marking tool for Plasma cutting stock.

Forget the windshield ,it's too strong. Side windows - lower corners are best they don't flex as much there. Use a large automatic centerpunch ,no swinging needed !

If we're talking about dedicated window punches, there are many less pricey options on the market. That being said, the window breaker on the Umnumzaan serves well enough. Real use does not automatically result in the user getting cut.

Been carrying my umnum this week. Was inspired to bump this thread. Any new glass-breaker tales out there?

Just over a year ago I was in a car that rolled, and used the pivot end of my sebenza 25 to mash enough cracks in the windshield, that I was then able to kick out the rest. I made a post on here somewhere about it....I think that's considered abuse though!
