Quick question that I could not find an answer to with the search function.

I have been looking at picking up a Ka-bar TDI and have come across a couple of reviews that claim that the glass filled nylon sheath rapidly dulls the blade. I am also looking at picking up a Ka-bar plastic sheath to replace my leather one on my old USMC ka-bar which is also glass filled nylon according to Ka bar’s web sight. My instinct is this is internet rumor but thought I would check with the knowledge base here. Any negative experiences with the glass filled nylon sheaths used by Ka-bar?

Thanks

yeh, the glass one dull the blade. but its an easy fix, just run the knife in and out a bunch of times until that spot is worn down. then its fixed. or call kabar and ask nicely for a replacement.

Interesting and a logical fix. So if I follow this correctly some of the glass filled sheaths may dull the blade due to a high spot or other fit issue. However if you just wear in the sheath or get a different one you are good to go. sounds like nothing to get excited about.

Thanks

no high spots, just well formed and good fit. Just like kydex the edge will rub, the difference is the glass is hard and dulls the edge, where kydex gets cut.

All of 'em do it. Spyderco, ESEE, Ka-Bar, etc. You can take a thin file and file down the blade side.
I just carefully unsheath and resheath, keeping the spine tight against the sheath.

yup.

google or search a little here, you'll find related posts

KaBar is switching to a non-glass sheath as time goes on as well.
