Strictly for a showpiece off course.

Glass handles & Damascus,

Has it been done?

another BF member suggested it in another thread,& got me thinking....

Jerry Fisk has been in the process of building a damascus sword for several years now were the plan is for him to travel to the Swarovski Crystal factory to direct/create a handle made of their crystal. Should be quite unique and beautiful when completed.
If that qualifies as glass.

I think I've seen handles made from fiber optic cable, (Warenski?) and definitely clear crystal handles, (also Warenski) but I've never seen one made from glass.
Sounds pretty neat.

I remember an art dagger once with a damascus blade, a really ornate cast bronze guard, and a blown glass handle, but for the life of me I can't remember who made it.

I remember Tim Britton wrking with a noted glass artist on a knife. I am not sure if I have an image to show. I'm not home.

That said, I remember well this incredible knife collaboratin with Stan Fujusaka and C.J. Cai.

Here's what I wrote up about it: C.J. Cai is one of the MOST artistic engravers in the world.I this case he also cut the scene on the inside of a 'snuff bottle' which was fabricated into a handle. Stan Fujisaka, is legendary among anyone who has been involved with knives for years. Two Hawaiians at their best.

i have seen a few dozen glass handled knives.... mainly just test peices.... there are a few ways to build such a beast many of them not the best idea honestly its a major compromise in materials.......... i have seen hollow handles done on rod tangs ... with a reciver cup and an pomel crown that would cup the lip of the hollow handle.... i have seen many broken ones where slabs were ground and then tried to rivet them on.... mainly due to over pressing the glass.... the other issue you get into even with glue and glass is it doesnt stick but also the heat expansion and shock normaly will crack glass....
or seperate...

i wouldnt make a hard use knife with glass handles but display peices , even kitchen wear is possible... i have seen a few wedding cake services with some various glass peices and even table wear... i have also seen a few where the glass is worked into a traditional handle material or glued or captive in the tang....

Coop thanks for posting a pic

Kevin the Fisk sword sounds very interesting . I know I like there optics so tell Jerry to pick up a few scopes and binos if he gets to that part of the factory:D

Steve Johnson recently sold glass handled knife (pic is still on his site). Glass was done by Gordon Smith.

Coop, I started looking on your website for that Stan Fujisaka/C.J. Cai piece because I remembered that one well. I couldn't find it, so thanks for posting it again.

From Tim Britton's website: "This is the first knife of a "Master Series" of ten collaborations with internationally famous master craftsmen. This first knife has a forged raindrop pattern damascus blade by Tim Britton and a glass handle by John Nygren of Walnut Cove, North Carolina. The ferrule is sterling silver encrusted with a 24k rose gold and gemstones. OAL 14 1/2"."
