Glass Platen

I am kind of a scrounger and make do with a lot of my equipment. One thing that I just came across was an discarded kitchen stove with the ceramic cook top. Even though I broke the top removing it from the metal frame, I was still able to salvage 14 pieces 2" X 9" that I can use for surfacing the platen on my belt grinder. The stuff cut pretty much like glass with a conventional glass cutter but it could easily be cut with a diamond blade on a tile saw or probably even be cut dry with a diamond blade on a side angle grinder. I took a piece and heated it up red hot with a torch and dunked it in a bucket of water and it was unfazed. Also, it has a textured back that I believe will let it adhesive adhere to it better. Just a heads up and one way to save a couple of bucks.

I use glass for an oven as a platen. I bought it for little money 5cm wide ~2", the same as my belts

I had bad luck glueing the stuff. I ended up using a diamond wheel in my dremel and dove tailed it to a steel platen.

Heads up on the ceramic material. I have used it for 2 hours today and it seems to be completely unfazed. No wear marks, no scratches, nothing. If you get a hold of one of these ceramic cook tops, do not pry on it like I did. Use a propane torch and heat the ceramic over where the silicone bonds it to the stove top. When the silicone gets hot it will release and the entire ceramic piece should be able to be removed in one piece.
