I wanna mod a few opinels to keep in the boat at night. What paint/materials do yall recomend?

Hopefully someone else has had better luck than I have had and can prove me wrong. But I have never had anything that works good for glow in the dark unless it was exposed to light prior to being in the dark. I think the best bet is high visibility paint, or high visibility paint that also glows in the dark, or even a combo. Personally I go with high visibility orange with some glow in the dark white paint (look at gun sight paint for starters) and do stripes with it over the orange. And maybe a protective clear layer on it so the paint doesn't wear off. This way it should be easier to spot and if you don't spot it but still hit it with your light hopefully you charge the paint so it glows.

No background in this, the closest thing I have is running a haunted house in the community for around 7-8 years. Drawing from that experience and working with a lot of neon paint and black lights I remember that a lot of the more high visibility colors we used such as orange, yellow, certain greens, white (especially when put on top of other colors) will stand out greatly with or without light. I recommended the high visibility orange + white glow in the dark on top as it stands out even during the day in bright light. Where as the yellow + white will tend to blend into each other more. And part of what you want is for there to be something to draw your attention to the knife, something out of place so you instinctively look at it and something orange with stripes will probably do the trick and not fit in anywhere.

Thanks for the info. As far as something being out of place I was thinking about inlaying a few strips of fiber optic cables of a differnt color like the ones on tru glow sights. I have a couple of black lights I plan on installing because the type of fishing line I use shows really well with them so keeping the paint charged shouldnt be a problem.

If you look around hard enough you can find tritium vials in various colors. They produce a steady glow that can last for years. Just inlay them into the handle with a little epoxy and you'd be good to go.

I have a tritium bead tied on my ZT 0200

I love trits!

Have them in flashlights, knives, even made my own front sight for my old browning BL-22.

As far as making the knives glow get some glow powder, mix it with clear Devcon brand epoxy and apply like regular epoxy. It's what I used in the holes of my wife's Ripple:

The "glow powder" glows very bright and lasts hours after charging all day in the sun, regular flashlights will charge it pretty good but UV light really helps it so if you have a black light that'd be perfect.

Another choice, which you can see in the pic's (but it glows way less) is to make yourself GITD paracord lanyards for all the knives you want to glow.

I can see a few of my knives getting these.

The small vial in the middle of the clear bead is what puts off the glow. Like I said (and if your not into lanyards), you can find just the vials if you look around and then inlay them into your Opinel's handle. Preferably somewhere that wouldn't be blocked from view if the knife was laid down, Like the but of the handle perhaps.

Glow in the dark stuff works too, but I personally don't like to have to rely on an outside light source. GITD doesn't do me any good first thing in the morning it the dark woods. Tritium does.

I've installed several exit lights with this stuff in them but I wasnt aware of the beads. Im gonna order a few for my edc and make lanyards like yours but looking at the cost of the beads vs the cost of a opinel i think I'm gonna get the GITD powder and some clear epoxy. Plus I can dip a few rod tips while I've got a batch mixed up.
